"That was once a lively neighbourhood. Children played, laugher filled the air, parents smiled and laughed with each other. Then the first one went missing. A little eight year old ran after her red balloon into the distance when her parents weren't looking. She was never seen again. A boy, eleven, went down an alleyway looking for his kitten. Neither were found. After five more of these disappearances, many people moved away. The only people that live there are ghosts.
Or are they?
The people that drive through that town sometimes say that they have seen a light on at one of the windows of the houses. The police looked into it, but the only thing there was mirrors. A few sets of footprints, though, were there, matching the description of the missing children’s. After following them, they led to nowhere but mirrors. What happened? To this day, no one knows. But they say the answer lies in that house, in the reflections."
This is the tale you were told about why the neighbourhood next to yours was empty. Most of your friends thought it was just a children’s story about why you shouldn't wander off. But you knew better. You had seen the lights, seen the house. You had seen vague images of people wandering around that town who quickly vanished. You wanted to know why. One night, you snuck into the town. There was a light in the house, and you followed it. You opened the door, and put your feet in the dust.
"Hello? Is there anyone here?" you call. Immediately, a reflection appears in a mirror. It is not your own, but one of a five year old girl in a pink dress. "Wanna go home! You gotta go home to!" she cries, but more reflections appear. "Go" hisses a teen with a green Mohawk, "Run!" yells a tall boy, "Go before the master comes..." says a sad eight year old with a teddy bear. Your mind starts to spin as you look around at all the mirrors. You feel sick, like you don't know anything. Then something moves behind you. It has no reflection, you can't see it.
"How quaint... another little child. Are you here for fun, little one? Are you lost?" You look frantically for the speaker, but all you can see is smoke. "Now, now, young one, you won't see me. I'll have to keep you though. We simply can't have this getting out." The voice seems amused now. "You'll go with all the other children now, into the Otherworld. Be careful there. It's not the same, it has different rules and different ideas. You'll change too." The voice is full of soft smiling, with an undertone of concern."Now, enogeb!" A mirror glows and you are pushed into it._-_-_-_-_
You wake up in a room with other children, but they look different somehow. They all were the ones you saw in the reflections, but odder... less human. One of them turns to you slowly, with an angry grimace on his face and silver eyes. "Hey. Welcome to the Otherworld. No return ticket, no other chance to see your family and no other way to become normal." You look confused, having only been pushed through...
"The mirrors", says a friendlier looking girl with a sad look in her silver eyes "They let us see out into the world and give messages. They taunt us with what we'll never see again."
A smiling boy takes over with a glimmer of hope in his silver eyes. "Optimism, guys! Yeah, we may never be normal, but where's the fun in normal? And this world is so awesome!" There is a ripple of murmurs of agreement, but a few are cross grunts.
"Umm... excuse me, but what did he mean, not normal?" You say. The girl turns back around. "You are not human any more. You are monstrous, like the rest of us". She reveals her fangs, another changes shape, the optimistic boy becomes transparent and another bursts into flame. You step back, but suddenly face a mirror. Your eyes are no longer the colour they once were. They are the silver of the others. And the rest of your face? "My face... I can't see it!" The others walk towards you, and you realise you can't see them either, only their eyes. "This is the mark of the Otherworld" A little girl says, clutching your hand in comfort.
