By which I mean, a character sometimes just needs to be the cause of their own angst. A character who makes mistakes and suffers for them as a consequence [and learns from them as well, develops from them] is much more likable than a character who is always presented as pure and clean, yet is abused by others throughout their whole life for no reason other than the fact that they exist.

This. This THIS THIS THIS. Characters need to mess up. Sometimes it needs to be their fault they're unhappy, because sometimes that happens in the real world. Often, one thing happens which isn't their fault, and then it gradually gets worse because of their slightly screwed up psyches, until you've got a real mess. Anyway. Bless you for saying that.

With the whole 'cause and effect' thing, I agree completely. For example, I have a newer character who is extremely rude obnoxious and selfish. He's not 'snarky' as such, but just a general jerkwad that nobody likes because he is so up his own butt. This is mostly because his family pampered his ego so much that he thinks he's more important, not because of traumas. He probably needs some to get a reality check XD. This is why I like using him in role plays because his character sometimes has a transformation depending on what happens.

That's actually the whole premise behind the angsty character I have XD
Like, people try to be nice and make things positive for him, and he's like "NOPENOPENOPE I'LL HAVE NOTHING OF IT. I'M GOING TO BE NEGATIVE NO MATTER WHAT YOU SAY TO ME" and causes most of his own troubles(but he blames it on others even when his suffering is his own fault). At least later on when he's not around the abusive people anymore, old enough to make his own life decisions, and has thoroughly turned into an asshat

Got my forms done that needed to be done, but now I have no time to actually write replies that I want to write. I forced myself to do the forms and now I can't do the actual roleplaying I want to do. Gah I'm beginning to hate forms more and more. So time consuming. So to all my partners out there, I had intended to knock out a good chunk of my due replies tonight, but forms needed done and took up all of my time. So, I will have to work on replies tomorrow.
