@Iridien - I'm not 100% sure but it's possibly mastitis. If it is then it is treatable. I'm not sure if it occures in animals that have just had litters or can happen at any time, I know it's not rare.

You can look that up and see if it fits her symptoms, I wouldn't be able to tell you either way.

I can officially say I'm sticking to rats & not other pets.

My bearded dragon just gave me a bite of a lifetime and I am officially shocked/terrified. I'm worried he's sick and that's why he's acting up.. *sigh*

Anyway, Tater & Malt from Naomi's litter are now almost completely bald. Yay, double rexes!

*pops in* Hey guys, I'm thinking of getting a rat and I thought that coming here may be a good idea for information.. Would a five gallon aquarium be good for a rat or two? Are males better for first-timers or females (I've heard that females are more active, and males are calmer)? Also, as a first-time rat owner, is there any advice that I can be given? ^^ Thanks for reading, and, if possible, answering!

Preferably not an aquarium. Air circulation is not very good and since ratty lungs are pretty sensitive, you don't want chemical build-up from their excretions to make them sick. As for gender, it just depends on you. I started with males and will likely stick to them forever because I just like the calmer and more squishy boys. But my friend started with girls because she doesn't like the big boy balls and she prefers more active and playful pets. Both are good though, and when they're young all ratties are extremely playful. My boys are over a year old and still bounce around like bubs.
As a first time owner, do a lot of research. I read all over google for how to properly care for a pair of rats(always get them in pairs at least, rats are social animals and live a longer and happier life if they have a buddy to play with). There are a lot of potential diets, things to look out for health wise(signs that your rattie is getting sick and ways to counter them whenever possible), and other really useful information that will contribute to the overall quality of life for your rats.

A five gallon aquarium is WAY to small for even one rat. The bigger the cage the better. Rats are highly social and do best in same sex pairs. I prefer males as first time pets, they are more laid back and like to cuddle.

On another note, I just had someone argue with me for 10 mins about my hairless rats being double rexes. I told them over and over, I dont have rex in that line, only hairless, lol

Depends where you live. In my country (uk) they have to go through quaranteen which could be months and months.
