(putting on lotion isn't a choice thing, I really hate having it on my hands, but sometimes I actually have to use it or else problems arise...)
I always end up waiting a day or so before interacting with them in hopes the lotion won't have effect by then, but that's quite the amount of time.

Please don't keep on reading if you are like squeamish or anything, it involves ratty infections.
I don't post here too often, but 'm not sure where else to ask. I just noticed one of my female rats' nipples appears to be enlarged, filled with pus, and has a black tip. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem and can tell me if a vet would be able to cure it for a reasonable amount of money or if the vet would just tell me to put her down.
Finding a vet around here is almost impossible and I don't want to be in the same situation I was in with my rat who broke her leg. I went to a vet for her and the vet told me either I can do a cast for several thousand dollars or I can put her down, but he refused to let me take her home as is. (She didn't seem to be in pain, and didn't squeak when we touched her limp leg.)
Here's a picture. I put it as a link so that way if you're squeamish you can avoid it, but here's the warning.
It was hard to get a good picture of it, but past that visible black tip there's a ring of white and then the pink of her skin.
Edit:
Also she used to have a pretty nasty respiratory infection and as a result now has a permanent headtilt despite the antibiotics.

Okay, I am going to do some bragging, don't get to do this often XD
I actually got to bring home my new babies today and they are soooooo.... cute!
This is Mouse. I did want a brown/black one but when I was putting them into a box to choose from he managed to escape twice and caused a lot of trouble for me having to pull all the cages out to get him so I just couldn't resist the little trouble maker. XD He looks like a mouse sort of color, hence his name.:
(It's a bad picture, sorry)
This is Badger, I wanted a white and grey one. Some-one before on here commented that they had Badger type markings then my friend started calling him Badger because he looked like one so it stuck. :
I am not really all to sure how old they are, they were all in a cage together with about 20 to what seemed like 50 rats. The staff at the college said they were weaned however I am yet to see Badger eat but then again I have been letting them settle in and he seems rather distressed at the moment which I can understand, it's probably terrifying to come into a new place.
They need a bit of handling to but they don't bite which is good.
A picture of them both together when bringing them home. :3 :
