Hm, yes, I've read books like that. And wolf instincts are very strong even when in human form (which was why I mentioned them having a different way of life, more.. pack revolving)
I'll think about trying to add that, somehow ^^

I really don't want it to be like the twilight werewolves which is why I said shifting should hurt, and otherwise it just seems to me like they'd be shifting whenever they felt like it, etc.
Starkit, that would be a good idea, but just because they're higher ranking doesn't necessarily mean they're stronger- they just have been able to have the ambition and strength to defeat someone in a fight. But I'll take that into consideration :3
Journey- its the woods wolves trying to get rid of the city ones. The spies could be ordered to (or do on their own) try to poison someones drink to kill them or make them sickTrue. I don't know if you've guys read a werewolf book to where the wolf is separate from the person. Like, they have to fight their wolves to keep from letting them take over. I know I'm being confusing right now, but I'm trying to explain the best I can. It's like the wolves, when they shift, take over, or sorta do. The person is still able to think and do stuff, while also letting their wolf take on instinct. Does any of this make sense?
In a book I read, it was different for each person how hard their wolves fought for dominance, to be let loose. The way they decided who was Alpha was who had the more dominant wolf. It just happened. No one really decided who was more dominant. It just happened when they shifted and everyone saw how strong their wolf was. Does this make sense?

The wolf decides on the mate, and the person has to fight their wolf instincts, but it varies for each person how hard they have to fight their wolf. You could say some people have their wolves close to the surface, so it didn't take much for them to let their wolf take over. It could even be if the wolf takes full control, then they go feral. I don't know, these are just suggestions c:
