Yes, but would the stallion's attempt to protect their mares against the threat? And the mothers defend their foals? :3 I'm just saying.

True, but on a whole horses simply run. When running from things, they run as a tight pack sort of, really fast and stick together. Foals and stallions are not much different in speed from mares. It's an interesting idea, though.

But you're forgetting, Toppyrocks, is that horses have been domesticated for thousands of years.
The normal, broken in horse has no fear towards humans.
Humans feed them and look after them.
They'd only fear zombie if they knew they were going to eat them.
But Zombies, not matter how decayed, look like humans.

Horses might recognize that they smell different because they're dead, but do horses even comprehend the subject of death?
No way are a horses instincts going to flare up over a zombie, to them, they'd just be an odd moving human.
It took thousands of years to train them into letting us ride them, to curb their instincts, that cannot simply all be undone in a matter of seconds.
A domestic horse it not going to know when to run from a zombie, it would take awhile for it to set in that if a zombie gets close to them, they are going to be eaten.

The only broken horse that would spook from a human immediately is one that has issues pertaining to humans. :U

Wild horses on the other hand are a different matter all together.

But I for one, think it would be an interesting idea to RP out. The emotions that a horse has to go through as it comes to a realization that a human, that once cared for an loved it, is now a predator that it must run from.

I agree and disagree with what you are saying, Brute. Horses are a lot smarter then lots of people think. The way you walk towards a horse tells them your intentions. If you are relaxed, don't look them directly in the eye and are quiet, they will understand that you aren't going to hurt them, usually. Even so, many horses that don't like to be caught (there's a lot of them) will move away. If you were to walk straight at a horse with your shoulders square and staring them down, they will feel threatened. If a horse sees someone walking, acting or anything odd about them, they will be wary.

The only broken horse that would spook from a human immediately is one that has issues pertaining to humans.

I don't agree with this. I've had horses running away from me in a field simply because they didn't want to come inside. Horses spook if you wave your arms or jump around. Horse can spook if you are wearing something that makes noise or looks very odd. One horse I know turns his behind to you and threatens to kick if you walk into his paddock simply because he doesn't want to go inside, but as soon as you have him caught he is a complete gentleman. Horses will spook for seemly no reason. Maybe they heard a small noise behind the wall, maybe the orange cone that always sits in the corner of the arena was moved a foot to to side and now looks like a monster. They can detect the smallest things, so a zombie, who smells dead, moves oddly and is decayed would certainly make them wary, unless it's one of those highly trained de-sensitized police horses or the like. I don't know if horses comprehend death, but other animals can. Gorillas have been known to pay their last respects, and crows have seen 'mourning' in a way, too.

I do think that it would be an interesting idea, though. If the rp were to be made, I would like to know how it worked out and such.

I've been ridding horses when I was six and a half and I have done the stupidest thing around horses, young and old, and I have never been hurt by one. I've run full bolt into a paddock and vaulted onto my three year old horses back before, I've slid off of them and I've run under their stomachs and other completely bat**it insane stuff that should have had me killed by a horse like you describe. Yet the only time I've hurt myself is when I've fallen off is when the horse refused a jump. (I have really bad grip in my legs, completely my own fault.)

I've walked up to horses in all matters of different body language and none of them have ever cared, for a show I once played a zombie with a zombie horse, complete with groaning and limping. My 10 year old horse couldn't care less. And zombies do not walk intimidatingly, if anything they're even less intimidating than a normal human with their body language. They're slow and bent over, half of them are most likely limping. A horse would probably walk up to them before they even managed to make it to the horse. A horse would spook and run off if a zombie full out sprinted at it,of course.

I've only had one horse in my entire nineteen years of life that didn't want to be caught and would trot off quite happily, but that was simply because it hadn't been trained well. If I had a horse that tried to kick me because it didn't want to go outside? Well, that horse would be getting some new training, that's just badly taught manners.

A horse shying is simply another step of bad training. I'd led my horse over tarp and walked it through a field with plastic bags flapping in the wind with no spooking whatsoever. All of my friends have trained their horses the same way as well, even police horses are trained this way. If a horse spooks or acts aggressively towards a human, it's simply the mark of bad training from the owner.

Well, horses are each different. There's no way to set a certin expectaion for each horse. My trainer's horse thinks it's a dog and is only 25 years old. She'll trot even if you say the word with no body motion, she'll easily come to somebody, and she's fine with people crouching under her even though with other horses it's dangerous. I help out sometimes at my local stable and we always tell the kids to use soft voices, no running or screaming. We tell them to be nice and soft to the horse and no generlly big, huge moments. Awhile ago we had a horse get spooked and make a child fall simply from the kid's mom doing a fast wave. So with a zombie, thigns are mostly slow so I don't think they would blot right on the spot. and I agree, police horses are trained to ignore the other sense of city life just like a search dog. But I think if it was anything out of the normal they would do soemthing. Like dogs and many animals have been known to react to paranormal activity, burning smells that aren't in their usal daily lives. So a zombie might, like how someone said, be catious and warry, but not run. When they know it's trouble, like how I belive ToppyRocks said, they'll run because they are prey animals.
A man might befriend a wolf, even break a wolf, but no man could truly tame a wolf

Leave it to me to start a debate..

But Brute is right. It would take months, even years if the horse was well-trained, for a full-on Lord of the Flies-esque reversal. Wild horses, such as the ones in the western United States, would probably fear zombies from the start; the smell of decay and their humanoid appearance would make them bolt immediately.

But I have known domesticated horses to lament and refuse to touch their food when their owner leaves for simply a week. They are not very independent, they rely on humans for food, shelter, and everything they have. I imagine they would be something similar to dogs in an apocalypse, they would be among the first to die due to their devotion and dependence to their masters.

The idea is still amusing me. But from what I've seen of most horse role plays on this site, most of the CS population would be the Mary trotted up and said "Hi!" type, whereas I would hope for more of a realistic enviroment. -.-''

Okay guys, no offense, but this is an RP discussion thread, right? Not a "arguing-about-horses-and-talking-like-I-know-everything-about-them-based-on-my-opinion-and-experiences-rather-than-fact" thread. This is Chicken Smoothie, and we're talking about zombies for goodness' sake. I don't think with a bunch of undead wandering around it matters if the horse's behavior is realistic-especially considering half the RPs on here are about animals who act, for no reason, like humans.

Hmm... Zombies? I don't mean to butt into this conversation but personally zombies don't really bother me... no I don't care about them, but unfortunately I'm scared to death of human skulls with flesh still attached D:
I strangely can write horrible morbid things in my roleplays, BUT I can't stand the sight of the things I write about on a TV show or movie yet my imagination can imagine it ten times worse... ah I still don't get how my mind works...

And yes Midnightsun, Indeed I'll have to agree with you, It is indeed a childrens site we are on, It does not need to be relistic, only fun, if It was realistic I'd be as boring as my 10 mintue over time speech about England in the 1700s which I proformed in grade 7... What matters is that people are expressing their creativity through the roleplays C:

Uhm, anyways, I have a rant. How seemingly every time I get on the computer, the RPer I've been looking forward to RP with isn't there and some n00b wants to RP with me and I'm all "Nyaah." D;
