She made some speculations about chimps potentially having proto-religion that I always want to quote at people but I can't because she's apparently never said it in writing :P I wish I could remember all the details...I think it was about six or seven years ago now that I think about it *OLD*

Definitely, if you want to do some then I'll put them in the OP :)

Aaah I know the feeling. :'] It's so easy to get lost in a journal. xD

Plus a million. I get excited at paper titles though and then get bogged down in the jargon. They take so long to read (physics ons at least, but I presume it's the same for every journal). Talking of papers, there's was an interesting paper I read today on the Cosmic Microwave Background (which is the light that's still hanging around from the beginning of the universe, and from it you can work out the geometry of the Universe, how old the Universe is, and how structure was formed), the paper claims to have found structure in the CMB, which is a Big Thing, take a look at the structures they found);D ;D ;D.

Scarf, that's amazing... I hope someone investigates that soon, that'd be really interesting to understand whether higher thinking like that is a human thing or not. Although there's conjecture some studies would be pretty cool if they could get them. Glad you mentioned Tesla, (everyone loves Darwin - even me but like D: physics is the best obviously) him and his relationship with a pigeon is hilarious. Tycho was pretty cool too, he was an astronomer but got very drunk a lot. I mean that's not special, they all get smashed, but he had massive parties. Most astronomers nowadays don't have friends ;_;

@Moroko re: Neanderthals, I had to look up the term "Cro-magnons" and was disappointed to see that it wasn't this pokemon. I don't know why that phrase reminded me of this pokemon, but there you go. But seriously I didn't know that there was interbreeding, that's so cool!

Oh by the way, please let me know if you want me to put your name and a short intro in the OP like I've done with some people's, I don't want to do it without permission :)

Edit: I can't take anyone seriously with those funky april fool ªvatars XD

I could have sworn I responded here again last night. xD I got caught up browsing through all the goodies in that site Max linked to, had to bookmark it.

ohmai, Seraph, that chart of symbols made me laugh so hard. xD I doubt I'll ever be able to hear about Turin Shroud without giggling. <3 Sadly, Physics is one of the few sciences that I just do not have any knack for whatsoever (most of my knacks are in sciences. Other subjects my knacks tend to ignore completely) so I got lost after only the Abstract. (I tried though, really I did. ono)

Scarf, you lucky duck! She doesn't travel to here much (If at all?) so I've never even considered what it'd be like to hear her speak, but I'll bet it was awesome. If you can ever remember any details or if you come across any quotes, please post 'em. The idea that some animals may be advanced enough to have anything like religion is fascinating to me and I'd love to hear about her thoughts on the chimps' potential!

Aah~! I forgot I'd removed my name change note from my sig. xD Seems you all've figured out who I am anyway~

(I had more to add about something I read in my Abnormal Psych class today, but it's my birthday so there's too much going on for me to write much more. Not to mention I'm too excited about my new replacement tablet to be able to think clearly enough to be coherent. x3 If I remember what it is later tonight when I have more time, I'll make sure to give it a post~)

Oh, and I'd love for you to add me to the OP. :]

Heh heh, another anthropology article, but I just thought this was really cool. I read it in the New York Times a while back and just found it again on the web.

I guess I'll join, although I'm probably the stupidest least educated one here...
I'm ♥Reuben♥ (no, it is not referring to the sandwich xD), though I'll be changing my name as soon as I think of something better (and easier to type...). I've always loved science, and have previously considered becoming a veterinarian, and, while I've still not completely rejected this, I think I prefer chemistry to biology. So I know I'll want to go into some sort of science as a profession, but I have no idea what area.

I'd say my favorite scientist, like multiple others, would have to be Darwin. I'm quite frustrated over the fact that the library I usually go to doesn't have The Origin of Species, because I really want to read it. >.>

Anyway, I'll probably be one of the more quiet members on this thread... I generally prefer listening to what others have to say over saying things myself.

I'm surprised how many Darwin Lovers haven't been able to read Origin of Species. o.0 (or am I smooshing together various people from other places too?) I have a personal copy in my bookshelf and if I could share it with you all, I would. It's such a great read. If you have a Border's bookstore nearby (If you're not American, I'm not sure if you'll be able to find one where you live) They print highly popular classics and sell them fairly cheaply, which is how I got mine. If you're interested, you should check it out. :]

@mirandaciel - You may use this guy if you'd like. :] (You may have to refresh, I switched the items over from a different pet since I thought he didn't look as good as this one. x3)

And, I've forgotten what I wanted to say last night. xD

Hello fellow rainbow-wearing punks!

I've been meaning to come over here and crash the party.

Hiya, I'm Harpalyce. I'm a biology/english student - hopefully to graduate in May with my bachelor's - and I have a keen interest in science writing. To me the gulf between people who understand and people who need to understand is way too big, especially when it comes to the field of medical science.

As for the questions...

It's hard to say who is my favourite scientist. I can much more easily answer who is my least favourite scientist. James Watson - yes, of Watson and Crick fame - is high on my list of "people to punch if I get a chance". He has a marvelous ability to stick his foot so hard in his mouth that he may as well turn himself inside-out one of these days... I'm not saying this simply because I'm a Rosalind Franklin fangirl - 'cos I am a bit of one - but he has said some truly astounding things that are racist, sexist, just plain wtf-ist, etc.

Along with Rosalind Franklin, why don't we name-drop Barbara McClintock in here too? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbara_McClintock :)

Although he's not a scientist in the same vein, I have to say that I hugely admire David Attenborough because of his dedication and ability to explain to an audience - and especially how excited he is about nature, and how he transfers that excitement to his audience. He's like the Mr. Rodgers of biology. You can't not like him!
