welcome! <3
I do have a similar experience with the game, where I quit playing for a few years and eventually returned, but I've never given away my plushies ^^'
If you haven't played in a while, things are going to be significantly different from back in the day. around 2011 they did "Webkinz X" (I believe they called it), where the whole interface got updated. there's a whole lot of different functions, from the "family score" to deluxe membership and estore points, they've even been adding new games in slowly!
the market can be pretty demanding, for example I just bought a cheeky cat w/o a code and it was 40$- quite pricey, but I snagged it since I haven't found any for less than 60$ before. but I take your side about the game, too; my goal is to have every single Webkinz created both physically and in the game, so I dislike buying Webkinz without a code very much. the cheeky cat is, so far, the first I bought without a code (other than goodwill); I've wanted it since 2007 so the deal was too pleasing to me.
500$ for a german shepherd though? I'll pass. I'm hoping that someday the prices will drop- but after a few years it still hasn't!
what most serious Webkinz collectors use to buy Webkinz is an app called Mercari. if you've never heard of it, then you should give it a shot! there's usually some nice deals on there for 5-10$, you can also use eBay and sometimes Amazon (Amazon tends to be a little more pricey, though). I don't really like buying Webkinz over 5$ personally, but that's because my goal is to have all of them so in the end it's gonna cost a few thousand dollars lmao.
if you want help looking for certain Webkinz for cheaper, I can totally help you find them! feel free to send me a PM and I'd be glad to help out ^^
