xxxxYou're aware of the little presence following along behind you for a while, close to you arriving at the gathering. You can tell it's nothing dangerous; there's no scent of danger at all. Still, it's a little unsettling to be able to feel something's eyes staying on you constantly.
xxxxOccasionally you look behind, and you can tell that the nervous presence is taking shelter in the undergrowth nearby from how the lower branches rustle gently. More scared of you than you are of it.
xxxxYou're very close to arriving, probably no more than another sun-width of its descent in the sky to go, when you hear squabbling behind. You turn, wanting to see what's happening.
xxxxThe voices are quiet, muffled.
xxxxIf you didn't know better, it'd look like two bushes having an argument from how animated the lower branches seem to be.
xxxx"You need to build up some guts and do the talking! How are you meant to achieve anything if you can't even talk to anyone about it!"
xxxx"But it's scary! I've never spoken to that cat before, I don't know what to say or how to approach them or anything!"
xxxx"How are you going to learn without practicing! And, anyway, you said you'd find him again if you did something heroic, right?" slight pause; "If you're this scared, isn't taking the first move a heroic act?"
xxxx"He's hid in holes because he doesn't want to do things before, he wouldn't be ashamed of me following his example!"
xxxx"Do you really want to take that as an example? You nearly died that time! Look at that scar! Do you want a repeat of that? Am I going to need to get a second scar like that to get you to come out of your hole?" Slight pause. "You're an awful twin sometimes."
xxxxThere's the sound of a cat clearing her throat, and then a caliby comes out of the right hand bush, hurriedly brushing down the fur ruffled by the leaves. She gives a little awkward sideways glance, as if working out what to do to get past you having been watching through that whole conversation. Nothing, apparently. "So, hi. My brother here, who incidentally seems to have decided that it's less embarrassing to pretend to be a shrub, has lost his mate. Again." She rolls her eyes, both a striking metallic colour. "He's called Achilles? Absolutely huge tom, very heavily built, one bald patch on his left rear ankle? It's from an old scar; he's got a ton of them but that seems to be the only one he couldn't just shrug off." You shake your head. "Ah. Well. My brother here-" She gestures with one white paw at the bush - "Seems to think an act of heroism will get him to reveal his location."
xxxxShe turns around and looks pointedly at the lower branches of the bush, where you can just make out some similarly metallic eyes poking out among red fur.
xxxx"Apparently a battle is too scary and he wanted some "mundane heroism". Said something about helping lesbian cats have kittens definitely counting as being heroic enough." She twitched her ears - the equivalent of a cat-shrug. "Not sure I agree, but if he wants to be helpful, he's allowed to be."
xxxx"Wouldn't it make more sense to ask cats at the gathering for clues on how to find Achilles instead?" you ask, very reasonably, and surprised at why all these very strange cats insist on having long conversations with you every time you come to a gathering.
xxxx"You'd think. I said that to him."
xxxx"It's not very heroic though, to ask for directions!" comes a squeak from under the bush.
xxxx"There's no shame in it, though! You don't have to be silly just to be a hero!" You can't hear the muffled response from under the bush, but from the disgruntled look on the molly's face, it's clearly a childish insult.
xxxx"I could just direct any cat who seems heroic enough to get Achilles' attention to you guys to give any clues?" There's an audible sigh of relief from under the bush. Clearly he's not as allergic to accepting free help as asking for it. "How come you've come along too?"
xxxx"Ah, that's two fold." The molly answers. "Firstly, my brother's a complete mouse-heart. Second... look, I'm not turning down an opportunity to meet some pretty molly's to date, and Patroclus' heroism can extend to getting me and all my future mates' families started, if he's so insistent on that being the heroism he wants."
xxxx"Okay. Cool." You guess it's a bit of a weird love story to tell their future kits but it's also probably not your place to say that to a stranger. "I'll direct anyone who seems brave enough over to you two. The talking bush and the childminder."
xxxx"I'm Patroclus, and my sister is Sappho," says the bush.
xxxxYou roll your eyes at them as you turn around. Hopefully there'll be someone who can help those two incompetents.

- 1) Standardised spelling is a modern construct invented only a few hundred years ago, so any recognisable spelling of their names is completely acceptable and correct in my eyes. Patroclus is frequently spelled with the vowels swapped out in Greek texts, and Sappho regularly wrote her name as Psappho, so the numbers of ps and ses can be changed in particular.
2) Any adult fertile cat can apply for a slot between Patroclus and Sappho. They share slots between them. AMAB cats get a "sappho slot" and AFAB cats get a "patroclus slot". The only difference is whether kits have a chance of an Xo or a Y chromosome.
3) If I deem a kit to not be particularly interesting or there's only one kit in the litter, I will strongly consider making them have an accessory matching something among their stud parent's. Please tell me if there's a strong reason you don't want an obviously pride themed one in particular somewhere (eg homophobic parents is a strong reason; giving those kits a laurel or a violet is unlikely to cause as much trouble), or if you don't want to risk any accessory.
4) You are free to reference off-camera meetings of these two in your clan's writing, particularly sappho being mentioned meeting any female mates.
