fur is tricky and weird

I've never drawn a furry but I have drawn animals and the same rules still apply!! I'm not as well versed in drawing animals/anthros as I am people, and I never explicitly learned the anatomy of animals (aside from me just drawing what I thought looked right lmao) so I could be wrong in terms of realistic fur. I draw very stylized and have little idea how real fur works lmao. but yeah!! fur is kinda tricky but I'll try my best to explain how I do it!

    ✧・゚: * CHEST/LONG FLOOF *:・゚✧
I love drawing chest floof because it's just so fluffy and you could draw it a million different ways. I tend to draw it longer and with more sharpened ends, but you can do rounded ends if you want! It works either way. If I'm drawing short chest floof, then I'd probably round the ends a bit more for maximum floofiness. Whether I do sharp or rounded ends depends on what length of fur I'm drawing, but you can do all rounded/sharp ends if you prefer! Anyway,,, I also make sure the clumps of fur aren't all the same length and width. I usually draw a big clump, then a little clump, then a big clump, then a bigger clump, etc etc. Make sure the fur still follows the body! Like I'd draw the body without fur, and then the fur on top to make sure it doesn't look like the fur is out/in too far in comparison to the skin. Drawing fur in different directions is also good!! It adds a lot more movement and fur just sticks up everywhere in general.

    ✧・゚: * EAR/SHORT FLOOF *:・゚✧
ear floof!! I love ear floof it's so fluffy. So the way I do ear fluff is I make it much shorter than the chest floof, and I round the edges so it looks more fluffy, because ear fluff is generally fluffier? At least to me it is haha. I make sure it follows the curve of the ear and doesn't stick out past the ear. I never draw fur on the ear itself (just the inside), because the outside of ears generally don't have the same length of fur as the rest of the body! It's very short (and soft ahhh) so I decide not to draw fur on the outside of the ear. Where the ear meets the head, I draw shorter and fluffier fur that gradually gets longer, because I think that just looks neat! I have no idea if that's how fur actually works but I like it anyway haha.

I hope this kinda helped?? Also I just noticed I draw fur pretty similarly to the way I draw hair haha

This is a really lovely guide! I couldn't have put it better myself, fur is indeed tricky and weird. It makes a lot of sense and definitely makes floof-drawing less complicated! I wish I had something like this years ago when I was drawing dogs with spikes 😂😂

wow thank you!! I used to draw dogs and cats with really blocky and stiff fur and it looked so weird xD
That was a dark time in my history of drawing. we don't speak about the block fur lmao
