I was quite scared at first, but now I'm a bit annoyed about being stuck in the haunted forest. I could tell it was getting dark, even though it's always in dark in the forest, because I was getting tired. I kept walking for quite some time and then all the sudden there was a dark blue cottage. It looked very old but I wanted some sleep so I knocked one or twice but there was no answer. I decided to knock one more time and before I could even touch the door it flew open. I heard an ear splitting scream and then 'oh, hi. Your not who I thought you where.' I looked up and saw a weird looking mummy of all things. He was nice and let me in and gave me a witch costume so I would fit in. Then all sorts of spirits and monsters piled into cottage and we had tea in nice little tea cups and goldfish together and after that we sacrificed skittles to the gods. Turns out, monsters aren't so bad. Oh and the mummy was just a vampire in a mummy costume. They have a great sense of humour.

Completed work: As the sky went from a dusted pink to a creamy turquoise and finished off with a dark blue, the stars came out to play. Wrapped around my shoulders was my favourite, tattered blanket from when I was a child that still kept me warm. My eyes stayed focused on the stars as my cold hands held up my treat I had been awarded, a kit Kat. The once flowing tears had dried up on my cheeks into an unpleasant feeling but I ignored it. I ignored what had made me cry. Trick or treating wasn't the easiest it seemed, at least…not when your friends call you a chicken for being scared to knock on the doors. They mocked and taunted for being so afraid that I ran away to here… My secret place in the woods. Hopefully the Forest creatures could understand. 143/200

It was the night of Halloween, and screams of glee (or maybe terror) were heard all up and down the street. A young flit was going trick or treating for the first time, and was donning a headless knight costume. She really would have preferred to have the helmet, but it was too large, and kept falling off. Her cheeks were a bright pink color from the cold, and she shivered as she walked up to the first door. "Trick or Treat!" she called out, and was quickly awarded some Reese's peanut butter cups. Happy with her first quarry, she made her way to the next house. In her excitement, she tripped! Among the gravel though, was an unwrapped king size Kit-Kat! After Trick-or-Treating for a while longer, she made her way back home to her mother, who was only still awake at such a late hour thanks to some coffee granules. "Did you have fun, dear?" Her mother asked, but it was in vain, for the little flit was already fast asleep, dreaming of all the candy she would eat tomorrow.

The spider, tangled in fake cobwebs, watched with narrowed eyes from the porch as Halloween night commenced. Kids ran screaming with joy from house to house, faces turned gold by the dying of the sun. One by one, street lights flickered to life, shining down on the darkening sidewalks. The spider was curious what was happening, its tiny head tilted in confusion as it observed. Spider had lost its web in a storm the night before, having witnessed it being torn to shreds by the endless wind. Now, it rested in faulty ones, hoping they wouldn't fail. He observed quietly as children dressed in fluorescent pink costumes appeared on the porch, grinning from ear to ear as they rung the doorbell. They were all dressed as fairies, adorned with what Spider could assume was bright pink glitter. Possibly? Spider peered closer, all of his eyes squinting furiously. It wasn't shiny.. was it..? Sawdust. The kids had applied pink food coloring to sawdust as makeshift glitter. To be quite frank, Spider was impressed. And so, it watched as the kids got their candy from the nice lady whose house Spider lived in, and watched them leave. Kids were certainly curious creatures. (200)

An evening with a rosy blush painting the skies accompanied with an eerie howl of wind. In this twilight a woman covered in thick coats and scarves walked. The purple colour of her most visible garment was faded and worn. With her tattered clothing and unruly black hair she looked like a witch. A witch, however, she was not, but something else entirely. Something far more frightful.

The skies lost its crimson colour, turning orange instead. The wind was blowing harder as if it wanted to cleanse the world of any taint. Not relenting, the wind only blew harder for every second until it suddenly stopped in the beat of a heart, when he appeared out of nowhere. Or so it seemed, but the woman knew how the headless being could appear out of thin air. With his fabled cloak of invisibility.

The headless knight atop his ghastly horse set of in a trot toward the apparent witch. She stood unmowing waiting for him. A sudden itch made her move a strand of hair, an emerging spider crawled over her hand. The distance between the figures ended at a few metres. A handsignal in greeting and the negotiations began.

Completed work: Eltanin grinned through the large pumpkin mask that covered his face, waving an empty bucket around. He glanced at Lyra, who sat uncomfortably in her oversized, homemade spider costume in the corner of the room. The final and newest member of their oddball family sat on a cushion, one of many that lay sprawled out on the floor. “Come on, cheer up Lyra!” Eltanin said, eying some twix that sat in a large bowl on the table. Lyra sighed. “Not a huge fan, I don’t wanna go out.”
“Why not?” Mystic chimed, poking her head out of a large jar of worms that sat between her paws. “You’re a big spider! Scary! You can scare EVERYONE!” She giggled. Lura shrugged. “Thank you Mystic, but I just don’t understand the holiday. We didn’t celebrate it when Omen was here. I don’t understand why you guys care, there aren’t any kids around either. You brought out the fold-up chair and placed it out front, but all there is, is trees!” Lyra cried. “I miss Omen.”

“Cheer up Lyra!” Eltanin murmured, understanding the grief. “They’ll be back.” He reassured, handing her a small teacup full of skittles. “It will be okay. I promise.”

"Come on, get it..."
One might think it weird to watch a "zombie" child with a guinea pig on a harness stealing candy from his siblings. For Alex, this was normal. He laid on the ground in shadow, encouraging his little orange buddy name Rust to snag more candy from his younger sister's treat bag, silently cheering when he re-emerged with a Kitkat. Pulling the animal back, he quickly added it to his growing pile of treasure. "Let's see; some twix, some bubblegum, some of the really good lollipops. One more run."
"Snag me some of the almond joys," his older brother piped up, and Alex quickly shushed him, apprehensive of being found out. With one more nudge, Alex pushed little Rust towards the back, and the little guinea pig skittered along back into the bag. Moments later, he appeared again, this time with a bag of what looked like brightly colored chocolates.
"Oh hey, what'd he get?"
"CANDY ROCKS! Yum!"
But when he chomped down, he found out that it was, in fact, only gravel.

It's quiet downstairs. No more scratching of the girls pencil, no more barking of that old dog, no more roaring of the Hoover vacuum. No movement, save the occasional scuttling of small insects and the random over curious rodent. The bigger spiders that find their way to the attic say it's empty down there - that the humans have left and the house sealed off - and slowly they too leave. But not all of us have legs to leave this place or arms to free ourselves from our boxes.

Even I with my own legs and arms can't move on my own. Time passes. The pattern of my cloth body fades and the string that holds me together frays and tatters. Yet, even a lonely doll like me fares better than others. The holiday costumes, a werewolf and a spider among them, are empty and rotting. The cat ornament fell long ago, breaking a leg, but kept mostly in one piece by the patterned carpet beneath us all. We all lay here, forgotten, waiting for the day someone opens the attic, praying it's not too late.
