Pup:
The stunning male, number 5.
Name:
Sohan
Origin: Indian Sanskrit
Meaning: Charming
Why him:As you may have noticed, I have not tried out for a chimera yet. This is not because I haven't been interested in the species. On the contrary, I've been watching them since Lilian submitted the first chimera as a contest entry for -Kiley-, and have desperately wanted one. However, I don't just randomly try out for characters.
I only try to win characters which mean something to me, and this is what Sohan has done to me. He leapt out of the page at me, and while all of the pups in this litter are magnificent, Sohan stands out. There's just something about his colour combinations and the look in his eyes which strike me, and speak to me in a way that most people who have ever seen a shard of themselves, in any sort of book character or otherwise, would understand.
Sohan's personality jumped out at me. He's such a jaunty, flamboyant fellow, with such a fantastic self-image and pride in his appearance. He has come out for adoption at a time of great self-discovery for me, personally, and so I'd like to insert what I am learning as I grow and experiment with social interactions into his views and his world.
Sohan is special. I'm not the only person who has noticed this, but I've certainly noticed it, and so, despite the many other things I've got on my plate, I couldn't resist trying for the chance to develop this character.
Who he is:Sohan was born with beautiful markings and a peaceful bearing. He was given his name for his ability to merge seamlessly with the movements of his siblings almost instinctively, even at a very young age. His telekinesis is mediocre at best, but his empathic abilities are particularly strong. His parents had high hopes for his character, as they did for all of their pups.
He did not fail to live up to expectations.
Sohan is very good at pleasing others. He has a natural way with words, and always seems to know what to say to whom. He is tactful, intelligent, and silver-tongued. He is also very difficult to punish, for he has a knack for placing blame on others, or never seeming to appear to do wrong. This can be irksome for a potential punisher, for Sohan is far from innocent. He has a mischievous streak right down his back, a disregard for rules and orders, and is forever getting into trouble, frequently leading his friends into it right alongside him. Nonetheless, he is almost impossible to stay angry at due to his likeable and upbeat personality and his remarkable skill for manipulating a situation to his advantage.
Sohan mainly uses his skill to impress the opposite gender. He is a shameless flirt, and does not seem to know when to stop. He toys with the emotions of any female Chimera he can find, and is often spurned for his efforts. However, he is undeterred, and continues regardless. His flirtations are always delivered with a good heart and playful tone, and there is nothing cruel in his actions, for he doesn't mean to harm; merely to play.
Although he can be over-confident (and sometimes teeters on the edge of arrogance) Sohan generally makes an effort to be likeable. He doesn't always succeed, but then, nobody does. He idolises his father (although he doesn't admit it) and loves his mother. He has a good few friends, but just as many enemies, because although Sohan likes a good joke, he often likes it at the expense of someone else, and just as with his flirting, doesn't seem to know when to stop. For this reason, it may not be such a bad thing when he gets his come-uppance every now and again.
A canny rebel, Sohan only causes trouble when there is some sort of direct benefit to him. However, he can be impulsive at times, too quick to act, and more than once, a situation has spiralled out of his control...
In Summary:Sohan is:
Charming
Flirtatious
Mischievous
Strengths:
Weasels out of trouble well
Canny and intelligent
Gets along well with others
Optimistic
Good with words
Weaknesses:
Occasional arrogance
Impulsivity

Story: //A Near Miss//
Sohan skittered into the caverns in a flurry of multicoloured fur and enthusiasm. His eyes glittered, he looked to and fro, searching. He had just found something exciting, and he was overflowing with the need to tell somebody about it.
Sohan was entering his tender adolescent years, and blooming in them. As he filled out and his coat grew bright and lush, his self-confidence grew, too. He was a handsome, dashing fellow, and he knew it. Females around his age knew it, too, and this realisation both startled him, and kindled his spreading ego. Tentatively, and then with more eagerness and finesse, he began to test the new realms of his effect on others, and was thrilled by what he discovered.
His roving eyes alighted on an amber-coloured shape, and he grinned.
Marla.
Marla was the young female Chimera who was most resistant to his charms and wiles. She refused to be flattered, or led into his games. Rather than discouraging him, this rejection only served to make Sohan's desire stronger.
He had to make Marla adore him. It had to be her, because she so clearly didn't want to.
He sauntered up to her, swishing his tail with a coy grin on his face. He rubbed up against her, laying his tail against her forepaws.
"You'll never guess what I found," he crooned into her ear.
Marla rolled her eyes and stepped firmly on his tail as she got to her feet and strode away from him. Sohan didn't yelp, and refused to be put off. He suspected that she only fought so hard because she liked his advances, and if this was the case, why was there any reason for him to stop?
He too rose, and waltzed after her.
"I can tell that you want to know. Believe me, this is something worth knowing about."Marla gave a snort of contempt.
"Oh, I'm sure I could never guess."Her voice throbbed with sarcasm, but Sohan pressed on. After all, she had answered, and this was a definite start.
"Try. It will be worth it." "You'd have to give me a hint. I can't just guess. We could be here all day."She was responding. She was relenting. He was winning. He pressed on, with a grin.
"It's creamy and delicious, and best served shared between two Chimeras on a moonlit night." Marla's eyes widened. There was no mistaking the first part of that description.
"You found Tantigale eggs," she breathed, and then demanded,
"Where?"Tantigales were great, bird-like creatures which nested on the highest peaks of the Glass Mountains. They were very beautiful, very graceful, and very territorial. They were notorious for their ability to spew acid at attackers, and their four-inch talons. However, if one could bypass the parents, and get to a nest, the rewards were worth the risk. Tantigale eggs tasted like nothing else in the world. They were also, for various reasons, strictly forbidden. Nevertheless, almost every young Chimera had gone after a Tantigale egg, with various degrees of success. It was an ultimate prize, and the chance to get at one was not to be taken lightly.
Sohan had her. He held his head high and flipped his tail nonchalantly.
"I'd be happy to show you, but seeing as you're not interested..."Marla started to backtrack.
"I didn't say that.""Do I have your attention now?" "One second."//Some Time Later//
With a grunt and a heave, Sohan hauled himself onto a narrow ledge, and wondered when exactly things had gone so wrong. Looking over his shoulder, he squinted down at, not one, but two canine shapes below him. He had learnt three rather fascinating things that he wished that he had known before:
Marla already had a mate.
This mate was bigger than Sohan, stronger than Sohan, and a notorious bully.
The mate very much liked Tantigale eggs.
In hindsight, it made a lot of sense.
He turned away, and looked up at his destination. The nest had not looked terribly far away from where he had been standing. He suspected that this had been an optical illusion, for it looked much further then, and he was about halfway towards it. He glanced back down again, and gulped. He thought that he detected impatience radiating from the bully. Sohan wasn't sure which fate would be worse: plummeting to his death, or returning empty-pawed to face the male's wrath.
Falling seemed less painful, in the long run. At least it was quick.
With a look of shaky resolution, the climb was resumed. The crystal was slippery, and every step had the potential to end in tragedy. However, Sohan could not turn back. His reputation was at stake. Step by step, bounce by shaky, tottering landing, he inched up towards the nest. He stopped looking down. He did not need to be reminded of the distance to the ground. Gritting his teeth, he kept his eyes on his goal, and kept going.
The smell of Tantigale eggs was strong in his nostrils when something occurred to him. The nest was there. The eggs were there. Where, in that case, were the parents? Tantigales never left their eggs unguarded for long, and he had not seen the parents spiralling on the thermals; not when he'd first found the nest, and not since. Slowly, it dawned on Sohan that something wasn't right. However, he had gone too far to give up, and with a final effort, he pulled himself onto the narrow ledge where the nest rested.
Four perfect, smooth-shelled eggs, mint green and crisp-smelling, met his sight. Sohan grinned. His prize was there, just as he'd suspected. However, his smile faltered. How was he going to get all four eggs down? He reached out, and picked up one large egg in his mouth, but almost immediately put it back. He could only carry one that way, and not with any safety.
What if...
No, that didn't work.
But maybe if he...
No, that wouldn't work either.
As he sat and deliberated, he did not notice the three pairs of angry, hungry, eyes watching him, not too far away. The presence inched closer. Sohan was oblivious. It crept a little bit nearer. Sohan saw nothing.
Then a shriek shattered the air. Sohan's head shot up, his eyes wide.
He'd found the parents.
Without thought, he grabbed the nest in his mouth, and hightailed it back down the mountain, skittering and slithering, tumbling and twisting. An egg teetered, then toppled out of the nest, splashing fragrantly beside him. The parents' cries became more frenzied. A splash of acid singed the air beside him. At this point, Sohan had to choose between eggs and all of his extremities. Wisely, he chose his limbs. Placing the eggs down, he barely paused before he was off running again, eyes wide, making for the dens.
When he got back to his starting point, it was to find that Marla and her male were no longer there. Confused, frightened lest they had come to some terrible harm, he looked to and fro. Then, through a shimmering sheet of crystal, he spotted two diminishing specks of colour, making their way back to the safety of the dens. Sohan was horrified, but not really surprised.
They'd abandoned him.
He didn't pause for long. He couldn't have. The Tantigales were watching, and he smelled like their deceased offspring. Even as he started off, one of them gave a wail and made a menacing lunge towards him. Sohan yelped, and took off at an ungainly but remarkably speedy run. Feeling decidedly embittered about the affair, smarting with shame and a crushing blow to his ego, Sohan snuck home to lick his wounds, and the last of the yolk off of his shimmering, colourful coat.
The egg tasted wonderful, even in such small quantities. Sohan was in no mood to enjoy it.
//Back on the Cliff//
The Pantherbera, concealed behind a hefty wad of plants and rock, snarled in fury. On the edge. The snivelling pup whelp had been right on the boundary! If he'd only acted faster, if the pup had only remained longer, if those awful birds hadn't returned so soon... He growled, rose, and stalked back towards the Nevermore Forest. There was no use dwelling on it. It was done. It had passed.
They would get the Chimeras though, he promised himself. One way or another, the Pantherberi would win.
.....
Sohan never pursued Marla again. She, in turn, never brought up the eggs. All was well.
For the moment, at least.
With Sohan, trouble was never far away.
[Although I could write pages and pages on Sohan and his antics, I did not want the story to drag on, so I kept it relatively short and punchy. I hope that that is alright.]Art:

By the wonderful Norway. Thank you!
-How did the chimeras appear in the planet? Before they were chimeras, the Edhanastian Chimeras were just normal wolves, albeit with beautiful markings and unusual intelligence. However, a fallen meteorite sent power spilling around the planet. The wolves discovered the powerful crystal buried inside the meteorite, and when they brought it to their mountains, they were changed by it (in their physical characteristics such as long claws, horns and spikes on males; and the gain of certain powers such as telekinesis), thus becoming Chimeras.
-Where do the Pantherberi live? The Pantherberi live in the Nevermore Forest with the most dangerous of Edhanastia's creatures. They are sheltered by massive trees, and the ground is hard and occasionally spotted with black grass. This vile region got its name because one who entered it inevitably did not return.
-What are the Glass Mountains? The Glass Mountains are the home of the Chimeras, and the region where the meteor landed. They were created by the impact of the meteor, which caused the soil to rise. The meteor also changed the mountains into pure, clear crystal, hence the name of the mountains. Beneath the mountains, in a passage of caves, rests the last remaining piece of meteor, closely guarded by the chimeras.
