So, by selecting the correct layer and ticking L.A, you can get and colour and scribble over it. It will not go outside the layer you selected, so there's no worry of getting unwanted comours across the page!
Trust me, I though Lock Alpha was tricky when I first discovered it, but it is easier when you get used to it.
