Of Shadows

When you look around you, you can tell that something is off. The people are scared, suspicious, nervous. The buildings remind you of another time, another age. And there are other people, whom the rest avoid. They have a black and red butterfly tattoo somewhere on their body. You have arrived in Shadow Hollow; an island surrounded by forest and mountain. And water, of course. Plenty of water.

Shadow Hollow

Shadow Hollow is a place like none before it. There are cool winters with temperatures reaching -30o Celsius, and warm summers with temperatures reaching +30o Celsius. The houses resemble newer Victorians and the clothing is just as old-fashioned. Think corsets and long dresses. The people here are naturally suspicious, nervous, scared. And they have good reason to be. You see, Shadow Hollow gets its name from the Shadows that reside there. But I’ll get to that later. Don’t want to scare you off too soon, now. Shadow Hollow is divided into six districts; City Center, North District, East District, South District, and West District. We will be focusing on the South District. Each District has a district office, a general store, and a Shadow Catcher station. The City Center has the Shadow Hollow town hall, emergency station, general store, Shadow Catcher headquarters, amongst other things.

Housing
The houses are arranged in rows, but each house is separate from the next (as in, they are not connected). More than one person may live in each house. Shadow Catchers may live in these houses as well, but most live in rooms at the Shadow Catcher station. Shadows live in the Abandoned Shed.

Shadows

I guess I should explain about the Shadows now, shouldn’t I?

The Shadows are the namesake of Shadow Hollow and the reason for its resident’s nervousness. Shadows are creatures of night and darkness. They are made out of the same substance as shadows, hence the name. However, Shadows are much more dangerous than shadows. The Shadows have sharp pointed teeth, necessary for their diet. Which happens to consist of bones. Almost every Shadow will feed on human bone, but some prefer animal bone. That is highly uncommon. The only way to stop a Shadow is with sunlight or ruby. Most citizens of Shadow Hollow have a small ruby on them at all times. To identify a Shadow, look at the suspect’s teeth and hair. Do they have pointed teeth? Is their hair black? Chances are, they’re a Shadow. All Shadows have black hair. Normal citizens can have black hair as well, but they are treated as outcasts. The only way to be turned into a Shadow is by being bitten by a Shadow, and surviving, or being born to Shadow parents.

Shadow Catchers

Now, about the Shadow Catchers I mentioned earlier. They are responsible for keeping the Shadow population in check, which basically means hunting down and killing as many Shadows as possible. Shadow Catchers are heartless and sworn to protect the city with everything they have. Shadow Catchers undergo a rigorous training and initiation ceremony before they are accepted. At the time of acceptance, they get a black and red butterfly tattooed somewhere on their body which marks them as a Shadow Catcher.

General Population

Well what about the general population? Not too interesting after the Shadows and Shadow Catchers. They are terrified of Shadows and wary of Shadow Catchers. They are naturally suspicious of strangers, but can be quite sociable with other residents of Shadow Hollow. Of course, there are always exceptions, aren’t there?

Form and Rules

Shadow Catcher Rules

These rules do not need to be followed, but offending Catchers may be punished by a superior.

1. You may not have any friendly contact with Shadows
2. You may not rebel against your leader
3. You must have limited contact with the general population of Shadow Hollow
4. You may not desert the Shadow Catcher ranks, punishment is severe
5. You are not allowed to fall in love, it might cloud your judgement

General Rules

These must be followed, strikes will be given out to rule breakers.

1. All of Tess’ rules apply
2. What I say goes, if you have any questions feel free to ask
3. No less than five sentences per post and use correct spelling and grammar; if you have writer’s block, PM me and don’t post
4. You will be considered to have quit this RP if you have not posted within a week of you last post; or if you have not PM’d me saying that you will be away, have writer’s block, etc
5. No more than five pages of posting if I am offline
6. Some powerplaying will have to be used, but be sure to get the other person’s permission beforehand and do not go overboard
7. Absolutely no god-modding or Mary/Gary Sues; I will be the judge of what is GM or M/G Sues, if you are unsure, PM me
8. I do not mind random OOC, however do not go overboard; rule number 5 still applies

10. I do understand that some violence will be needed (Shadows eat bones....yes, I think there will be violence) but, having said that, please keep the violence to a PG-13 level

12. This is the most important rule. If you break this rule, it means an automatic ban from this RP. The rule? No stealing anything about this RP or the plot. Why? Because this is based on a story I am writing. So, if you break this rule, you will be banned, poked repeatedly with a spork, and given to Dove to be made into a curtain. And no one wants that.
13. I have a touch of OCD, so this rule serves the purpose of making the rules even. Oh, and warning you that, if you chose not to follow these rules, that you are subject to being poked repeatedly with a spork.

General Description: Diaspora has glossy straight black hair that falls just past her waist. She will often tie up her hair in a black velvet ribbon. Diaspora has a sharply angled face with high cheekbones and full lips. She also has rather large grey eyes framed by dark lashes. Diaspora is 5” 6’ tall and weighs about 115 lbs. But do not ask her about her weight. You might just end up as her next meal. Because of what Diaspora likes to call “her condition” she is significantly paler than the “normal” citizens of Shadow Hollow. Diaspora has a nose piercing that she used to wear a ruby stud in, but after she was “turned” she started wearing a black rose instead.

Personality: Diaspora is a relatively anti-social person. She does not trust others easily, nor will she voluntarily speak to strange people. They have to talk to her first. However, once Diaspora becomes close to a person, she is very loyal. She would have made an excellent Shadow Catcher if she were not “turned”. She appears to be detached from the rest of the world, which is the only way she’s found to deal with her “new self.” Diaspora is now under the impression that love and friendship only makes you weak, so she acts cold towards most people.

History: Diaspora grew up in Shadow Hollow, same with her parents and her grandparents. Her family was relatively well-respected and Diaspora was on the list to start Shadow Catcher training. Until one night, walking home with her boyfriend from a friend’s house, she and her boyfriend were attacked by a group of Shadows. Diaspora tried to save him, but ended up getting bitten instead. The Shadows left when the sirens started, leaving Diaspora and her boyfriend lying in the street. Her boyfriend had been killed and Diaspora was taken into custody. She escaped the next day, running into the woods and encountering the same group of Shadows that had attacked her. They explained and said they were sorry. Diaspora cut off their heads. She now understood what was happening to her. She stayed in the forest for three weeks before going back to the Abandoned Shed and the rest of the Shadows, having accepted what had happened to her.

General Description: Midnight is very short and thin. He has wavy black hair that falls just past his jawline and often falls in front of his eyes. Because of this, Midnight is constantly trying to shake his hair out of his face. Midnight’s skin is not too pale; he almost always has a nice tan from roaming the island with his sister. He has a thin steel chain with a ruby set in steel on it that he wears as a necklace of sorts. Midnight has very dark eyes; the irises look almost completely black with a hint of red. His butterfly tattoo is on the left side of his neck.

Personality: Midnight is very outgoing and loud. He loves to party and, before completing Shadow Catcher training, could almost always be found dragging his sister to a party on the weekend. Midnight had taken a liking to horror movies from the moment he was allowed to watch them. He had always imagined being in the antagonists shoes, and loved it. Mentally, Midnight is slightly disturbed. He likes going out and finding Shadows, torturing them and killing them. This makes many people around him believe that he is insane. Midnight does not do anything to contradict this either. Instead, he uses it to his advantage. Midnight also loved riddles. He is quite intelligent; however he gets very frustrated very easily and is quite impatient. Midnight is very adventurous, he loves exploring. He is also very good at escaping places. One might say he is an escape artist. Midnight has a temper, especially if he is referred to as short. Which is not suggested, seeing as Midnight has significant skill with killing people in various, painful, ways.

History: Midnight did not grow up in Shadow Hollow. His parents moved with him and Dove when they were still young, due to a recent spike in crime were they once lived. They had no clue about the “crime rate” in Shadow Hollow. Midnight was considered an outcast for most of his life, partially due to his black hair and partially due to the fact that he is not from Shadow Hollow. The Shadow Catchers took him into custody shortly after his family arrived at Shadow Hollow. They tested him and made sure that he was not a Shadow. But while Midnight was there, he would tag along with some of the Shadow Catchers, much to their annoyance. He grew to like their line of work and signed up as soon as he could, much to his parents’ dismay. He convinced Dove to join him as well.

Other: Midnight has no qualms about killing people in the same method as he uses to kill Shadows. Just letting y’all know.
