one legend states that the quileutes are descended from wolves. wolves are said
to be their brothers still, and so it is against tribal law to kill them. however, there
is another legend; one in which the spirit warriors of the quileute tribe were the
first to shift from humans to wolves. these warriors were called on to fight 'the cold
ones'; vampires who killed their people and threatened the tribe. these shape-shifters
were able to shift into the form of a large wolf, some as tall as horses. each wolf's
attitude and colour are said to represent their true selves, however this has never
been determined. but, whilst their outward appearance changes, eye colours stay
the same, in both forms. even in human form, these warriors had almost superhuman
strength, and are easily faster than normal humans, and have greater endurance.
their senses are sharper also, as are their reflexes.
however, once the threat of vampires was gone, the warriors lost their ability to
shift. but when 'the cold ones' returned, so did the pack.

despite a treaty with one coven, there is still the threat of other vampires; those
who do not rely on animal blood for sustenance. those who do not care for rules,
or give much thought to a single human life. they act as if they are gods, as if
they have control over life and death. but no one is invincible.


the pack protect the people of forks. they watch over the humans without any
recognition or thanks. it's their way of life, and they stick to it.
unfortunately, they recently lost one of their own.
ben lahote was the beta of the pack, and was probably the easiest to get along
with. he was a good fighter, despite not enjoying the whole 'killing' thing. the fact
that it was rogue vampires made it a little easier for his conscience. but it was
one of these blood suckers who killed him.
the whole pack had been out on patrol, following the scent of new vampires in
the area. they had been pretty relaxed, which had been their downfall in the end.
they hadn't expected the vampires to ambush them, and by the time they did it
was too late for ben. the oldest vampire amongst the coven, arabella, overpowered
him and snapped his neck. he hadn't stood a chance.



it's been months since 'the incident', but the pack and their families are still reeling
from the blow. it's been a long time since they'd last lost a pack member,
and they still haven't recovered. however, there's a new threat on the horizon.


although it is possible for the wolves to be killed, they still hold quite a large
advantage over the vampires. but now the bloodsuckers have decided to try and
level the playing field. since going after them physically has never worked in the
past, they've decided to hit them where it hurts the most. the vampires have
learnt of the wolves and their apparent 'soulmates'. and so, they plan to go
after the wolves' imprints instead.

imprinting is believed to be the manner in which the shifters find their
soulmates, although the real reason behind it is unknown. some believe
that a shape-shifter imprints on someone with whom he, or she, has the
best chance to reproduce. others say that it is designed to make the
shape-shifter stronger. maybe it's a bit of both.

when a shape-shifter imprints, he becomes bound to that person for the
rest of his life. it only occurs after a shifter's first phase and could
happen with anyone, regardless of previous feelings towards that person.
however, it cannot be forced. if a shape-shifter does not react to a
human when he sees them after his first phasing, he will never imprint
on that person. the imprintee does have the option to reject them,
unfortunately. if this were to happen, the shifter would accept their
choice, but would be forced to live in deep emotional pain.

if the imprintee was a child, the shifter would act as an older sibling
towards them, and as he or she grows, their relationship would change
to one of friendship. however, in most - if not all - cases, romantic
feelings soon blossom between the pair. unless of course, the
imprintee rejects any feelings between them.
shifters are known to be very protective of their imprintees; willing
to put their lives on the line to keep their loved ones safe. it is said
that, even after a shifter has chosen to stop phasing and lived a
relatively normal life, he would still be capable of phasing, especially
if the person he imprinted on came to any harm.

in the event that an imprintee is killed, the shifter will never be able
to forgive whoever is responsible. if the killer was a member of the
pack, wether it had been an accident or not, it would result in a fight
to the death. therefore, a custom was established; "no wolf may kill
a fellow wolf's imprinted one". to this day, no one has broken this law.

welcome to forks, possibly one of the rainiest places in the united states.
you've got your basics here; the police station, local hospital, high school,
and public library. and of course, there's the local restaurant, the lodge,
where most people go to eat, or just to socialise. it's a nice enough place,
if you're wanting to settle down in a nice quiet town, that is. but there's
a lot more to it than meets the eye.

within the small town of forks is the la push reservation. most know it
for the beach there; a regular hangout during the summer months for
the local adolescents. but most of the reservation is wooded area. it's
what's in this area that matters. the woods is the pack's domain.
the quileute tribe reside in la push, having been there for hundreds of
years already. those brought up on the reservation go to school there,
instead of joining children from forks in their school.
it's not like they have been totally divided, but they didn't come into
contact with each other very often. even when they grew up into
teenagers, the quileutes and the youths of forks had made their friends
already, and so they stick to themselves. even so, they aren't hostile to
each other; they've just been brought up differently.

the pack have to keep their distance in order to keep their secret, and
to avoid phasing in public. they spend most of their time in the forests
of la push. the pack house, in which the alpha lives, is in these woods,
and is usually were they can be found if they are not at home.
but, then again... la push is their home.
