Ari ran up to her house. She was supposed to be back at seven o'clock; it was now eight. She saw her stepmother standing there with her hands on her hips.

"OH, IT'S NOT FAIR!"

"OH, REALLY! DON'T STAND THERE IN THE RAIN."

"ALL RIGHT. COME ON, MERLIN."

"NOT THE DOG!"

"BUT IT'S POURING!"

Ari's stepmother turned to Merlin.

"GO ON. INTO THE GARAGE."

"OH! GO ON, MERLIN. GO INTO THE GARAGE, GO! UH!"

"ARIANNA, YOU'RE AN HOUR LATE."

"I SAID I'M SORRY."

"YOUR FATHER AND I GO OUT VERY RARELY."

"YOU GO OUT EVERY WEEKEND!"

"I ASK YOU TO BABY-SIT ONLY IF IT WON'T INTERFERE WITH YOUR PLANS."

"YOU DON'T EVEN ASK WHAT MY PLANS ARE."

"I ASSUME YOU'D TELL ME IF YOU HAD A DATE. YOU SHOULD HAVE DATES AT YOUR AGE!"

Ari's father stepped into the room.

"OH, ARI, WE WERE WORRIED ABOUT YOU."

"I CAN'T DO ANYTHING RIGHT, CAN I?!"

Ari stomped up the stairs into her room. Downstairs, Ari's stepmother turned to Ari's father.

"SHE TREATS ME LIKE A WICKED STEPMOTHER IN A FAIRY STORY NO MATTER WHAT I SAY."

"I'LL TALK TO HER."

Ari sat down in her room, wound up her music box, and started reciting 'Labyrinth' into the mirror.

"THROUGH DANGERS UNTOLD...AND HARDSHIPS UNNUMBERED...I HAVE FOUGHT MY WAY HERE TO THE CASTLE BEYOND THE GOBLIN CITY...TO TAKE BACK THE CHILD THAT YOU HAVE STOLEN."

Ari's father knocked on her door.

"ARI? COULD I TALK TO YOU?"

"THERE'S NOTHING TO TALK ABOUT! YOU BETTER HURRY. YOU'LL BE LATE."

"WE'VE FED JACOB AND PUT HIM TO BED. WE'LL BE BACK AROUND MIDNIGHT."

"YOU REALLY WANTED TO TALK TO ME, DIDN'T YOU? PRACTICALLY BROKE DOWN THE DOOR!"

Ari's father walked away from her door and he and her stepmother left. Ari looked up her shelf by her bed.

"LANCELOT! SOMEONE HAS BEEN IN MY ROOM AGAIN!"

Ari ran down the hall to Jacob's room.

"I HATE THAT! I HATE IT!"

Jacob started crying.

"I HATE YOU. HATE YOU! SOMEONE SAVE ME. SOMEONE TAKE ME AWAY FROM THIS AWFUL PLACE!"

Outside thunder crashed.

The goblins that were gathered in the throne room froze, ears perked up as they listened to the girl speak. " She's going to say it" one of them said, only to be immediately quieted by the others.
"Shut up!" another shouted "She's going to say the words"

Jacob was wailing as Ari ran into his room. She grabbed Lancelot and turned to Jacob.

"WHAT DO YOU WANT? DO YOU WANT A STORY? HUH? OK. ONCE UPON A TIME, THERE WAS A BEAUTIFUL YOUNG GIRL WHOSE STEPMOTHER ALWAYS MADE HER STAY HOME WITH THE BABY. THE BABY WAS A SPOILED CHILD. HE WANTED EVERYTHING FOR HIMSELF, AND THE GIRL WAS PRACTICALLY A SLAVE. BUT WHAT NO ONE KNEW WAS THAT THE GOBLIN KING FELL IN LOVE WITH HER AND GAVE HER CERTAIN POWERS. SO ONE NIGHT, WHEN THE BABY HAD BEEN PARTICULARLY CRUEL TO HER, SHE ASKED THE GOBLINS FOR HELP."

[Moondancer]

"DId she say it?"

"Shut up!"

"You shut up!" The goblins all waited for the girl to say the words, breath held in expectation.

"Say your right words,' the Goblins said. 'And we'll take the baby to the Goblin City, and you will be free. But the girl knew the King of the Goblins would keep the baby forever and ever, and turn it into a Goblin. So she suffered in silence, until one night when she was tired from doing housework and hurt by the harsh words of her stepmother and she could no longer stand it."

Toby started crying harder. Ari sighed and picked him up out of his crib.

"Oh, all right, all right! Knock it off. Come on. Stop it, stop it! I'll say the words."

She paused.

"No. I mustn't. I mustn't say...I wish. I wish!"

She held Jacob up.

"Goblin King, Goblin King! wherever you may be! Take this child of mine far away from me!"

[Moondancer]

The goblins became more exited as they heard her say 'I wish" and then sighed in exasperation. "That's not it" one of them protested "Where'd she learn that rubbish? It doesn't even start with 'I wish'"

Ari sighed and lowered her arms.

"Oh, Jacob, stop it. I wish I did know what to say to make the Goblins take you away."

She walked over to Jacob's crib and set him back down in it. He was still crying.

[Moondancer]

Several of the goblins growled in annoyance and the one who had spoken up before said. "I wish the goblins would come and take you away right now. That's not hard is it!"

Jareth leaned forward in his throne, watching the girl with as much interest as the goblins that covered every available flat surface in the throne room.
