Mortimer just nodded, knowing well enough that questions weren't needed. They'd move faster without sleep anyway. Mortimer walked over to Biddy, standing over the resting Doberman uncertainly. He was taking something else's life into his hands. His decision to keep moving could very well be Biddy's death. Mortimer didn't want that. Unless she's already dead, Mortimer thought abruptly. Same as me. Mortimer shook himself and stooped to pick up Biddy, cradling the large dog precariously in his arms. Her fur was already cold, almost more so than Mortimer's shirtless chest, and this worried him greatly. He tried not to show it as he walked to the door, carefully stepping through to outside. It would be hard to run at night, especially if they found another road, but it was a risk worth taking. The sooner they found a vet, the better.

Alex sighed and looked at him. She didn't know if she was going to get any sleep. She sighed again and rolled over, pulling the blankets around herself and hiding her face in her pillow. She knew what she would see when she closed her eyes and she wasn't ready for it. She was shaking again and starting to hear the voices.

Ezra flipped open to the "Opinion" section of the newspaper and began to read. It was all about current issues, and although a lot of those issues discussed the war, Ezra couldn't help but find himself bored. Being bored wouldn't have been a problem, but being bored made Ezra feel tired. And feeling tired was beginning to make him doze off. He shook himself everytime he felt in danger, and made a practice out of digging his shoulder into the sharp corner of the chair's back, willing the pain to keep him awake. It wasn't working very well. Ezra flipped to the next page, stifling a wide yawn. He didn't usually feel this tired when doing night observations with patients.

Alex fell asleep but it didn't last long. She was asleep for five minutes when she started tossing and turning and it only took five minutes after that for the screams to start. She couldn't seem to wake herself up from the dream this time. She screamed again and rolled over, falling off the bed. When she hit the floor her eyes flew open and she started crying.

Ezra had been dozing in his chair, the newpaper having fallen from his hands, and was exhausted enough to miss the first few screams. He began to stir soon, and jumped into consciousness as Alex struck the floor, immediately getting to his feet and kneeling beside her on the floor, bending down over her in concern. "Alex? Alex, hun, what's wrong?" he asked worriedly, bending down to pick Alex up by her shoulders and craddle her comfortingly when she wouldn't respond right away. Ezra rocked back and forth on the floor, asking the question again and shushing Alex's tears gently. He had expecting something like this to happen.

Joke followed Mortimer out of the mill, looking around nervously. He was starting to feel anxious as he began to walk, begging himself not to hear or see any signs that there were guards around. "Which way?" He asked Mortimer, hoping he knew where to go. Joke was hopeless when it came to having a sense of direction.

Mortimer stopped in his tracks, brought up short by this inquery. Truthfully, he had absolutely no idea. He hadn't thought that'd be an issue, but it very well could be, when they might be sauntering into a trap, or even another house with soft white rooms like St. Auron's. Mortimer didn't want that. He hefted Biddy carefully in his arms, his heart feeling a little deader for everytime he saw the pale face of a guard lingering just behind the trunk of a tree. Mortimer looked to the creek. It had to led to somewhere: a larger body of water. And towns and cities tended to be situated along big bodies of water, thought Mortimer. If they followed the creek, there was a fair chance they might find civilization. And hopefully a civilization with a veteranarian. But which way to go? Mortimer walked to the creek, squinting in the dark to make out the flow of the water. In which direction would a larger water body be? Up the current or down? Mortimer furrowed his brow as he thought, finally deciding to walk upstream.

Alex just kept crying. She wasn't ready to answer the question and she wasn't ready to tell anyone what the dream had been about. She closed her eyes and wrapped her arms around her knees, hugging them to her chest. She wanted to get back on the bed but was to scared to move.

"Alex, it's alright," Ezra soothed, running a hand comfortingly down the back of her hair. "It's alright. Nothing's wrong, you're here, in your room, safe with me." Ezra waited a few beats, trying to see if Alex would be consoled, before leaning back to put his hands under her armpits and lift her back onto the edge of the bed. "Hey," he quietly, a small but kindly smile at his lips. "It's okay, Alex. I'm right here. Tell me what's wrong. Ezra wiped a few tears from her cheek and then reached across to the bedside table to grab a tissue, handing it to her and waiting patiently for any sort of answer.

Alex looked at him. "It's just the same dream. Over and over again. I don't know why it is still scary." she looked back down and bit her lip. She was scared of going to sleep now. She had thought that having a person in her room would make it easier to sleep but it had made it worse. "I just want to be better and get out of here."
