A suggestion of a chuckle bubbled up and out of Ari's lips, and his shoulders shook slightly with repressed laughter. He felt childish, giggling clandestinely about pant-wetting, but, well, it was funny. Casting his eyes in their direction, Ari studied the two girls who had joined in on the conversation, soon after his attempt to go over to them had been thwarted. The girl in the front was positively diminutive, standing at five feet at the most. Her skin was almost as pale as the snow behind it, and large hazel eyes would have dominated her face but for the frankly alarming scar that snaked its way from her right cheekbone to chin. It held a morbid fascination for Ari, and he felt himself burning with curiosity as to its origins. It would be grossly inappropriate to ask, though, so he held his tongue. His gaze then slid to the girl behind her -cowering, almost, as if she were afraid. She was just as short as the girl in front, serving to bolster his meagre confidence in his height. Her skin was a reddish-tan colour, juxtaposed starkly with the other girl. And, though his line of sight was rather obscured, he noticed her eyes were a startling pale grey. Ari wished he had names to put to faces, but they had not introduced themselves to the boys, and he wasn't going to be so overt as to inquire after them.
Glancing over at Korbin, Ari felt a spark of hope ignite in his belly. "Yeah, let's have a happy ending," he pleaded, surprised to hear the words flowing from his mouth. "We don't want bad feelings around this early in the Passage." He fell silent abruptly, feeling heat rising to colour his cheeks despite the cold. Ari was reasonably certain that was the most he had spoken consecutively in the company of strangers since he was a loose-tongued toddler. Averting his eyes to the snow below him, his gloved hands fell from the button they had been toying with, to be shoved in the pockets of his coat.
