Nicolae
Becoming curious
"Ode to the night, ode to the ni-ight,"
"Yes, well, I'm a talented stock-sifter I assure you," he assured Diana as she made her remarks on the unlikeliness and quality of the beer. To his surprise (and glee) Nick then discovered Diana to be drifting away into a story of some sort. At least, the start of one, though she stopped after a sentence or two. This was exactly what he'd wanted, it just so happened that he wasn't going to have to fully coax the tale out of her and that only made the job simpler. While she spoke and remembered, Nick listened intently and visibly as one of his hands slowly began to creep up the side of the bar with the bowl of peanuts dragged cautiously around with it. He began to fidget with it in such a way as to make it seem all the more appealing there on the counter, letting it go and resting his jaw on his now freed hand as he did so as to appear that much more nonchalant.
Of course, as he tagged along with the few words he didn't expect it to go the direction it did. Fae? He was not native to the British isles and did not know too much about slang, urban legends or local jargon; it was only by luck and a great reservoir of useless knowledge which touched greatly upon the realms of mythology that he perceived her to be meaning 'faerie' without her stating it outright. Faeries? The hell? What was with the world lately? He'd become... whatever it was that he'd become, he didn't like to call it by its most obvious monstrous term for fear that he might occur to himself as mad. On top of that, there was word in the papers and on the street of witches and wizards and magic. Simply put, Nick, who had always been sure in his actions and thoughts, no longer knew quite what to do or think. Was he going mad? Was society? He held his questions for the moment and resigned himself to simply processing the full implications.
Without hesitation he refilled her glass just as he would have had she said nothing out of the ordinary. Initially he'd been planning to encourage her pursuit of inebriation in order to get her buying snacks, now he encouraged it because he had found within himself some inquisitive hunger for more information; he'd always been cursed with such impulses and couldn't help but try to promote some sort of discovery by way of Diana freely speaking. Smiling coolly as if nothing strange had been mentioned, Nicolae nodded slowly and in a manner which suggested he deeply empathized with her statement. "And the hardest to forget, mm? Impossible to really enjoy an ordinary distillate after that. Tell me, where'd you come across such a rarity, moreover where did you come across one at an affordable price?"
