Miri walked alone, wondering where she was. She had been traveling from city to city, trying to find some place to stay. She was confused as to where to go when the orphanage sent her away. Had she said something wrong? She didn't know. She was hungry, cold, and tired. She didn't know where to go or what to do. She'd ended up in a small earth kingdom town and slept in an inn whose owner had been kind enough to give her a vacant room free of charge. She wondered, What will happened to me? [i]
Miri decided to practice her bending, as she hadn't had time lately to brush up on her skills. She left the place early and went to a nearby cave to practice. As she practiced, she normally had flashbacks of life before the orphanage. This time, she saw herself with an old, but cheery looking man, and they were talking and laughing. She was about 5 or 6 and saying, "Grandpa, why do you know so many things?" He smiled and said, "I learned different things from different people when I was young, Miri. You see, when you learn from other people, you can get valuable information." The picture faded, and she realized something. She could go to the Southern Water Tribe. Her life had been all turmoil lately, and she decided to take a little vacation. She went to the dock and found a ship heading that way. She used some coins she had found on the street to pay to board, and was off. She thought, [i]I know I don't like boats, but I need this. I'll treat myself. Somehow, though, she felt destiny pushing her there, not her own self.
