Mattie reached her house, splashing through puddles, fear growing all the way. Was she too late? Had that Merr person held her up too long?
She took the steps to the front door three at a time. The door was wide open, creaking on its hinges. Mattie's stomach dropped with dread.
Slowly, she stepped inside. There was a line of muddy bootprints leading in... And, when she looked more closely, a faint line of bloody pawprints leading out.
Zan appeared in the doorway behind her, making her jump. "Doesn't look good" Mattie told her, trying to conceal how afraid she was and failing as her voice shook.
"Look for your dad" Zan told her. "I'll stand guard"
Mattie crept through the rooms of the house one by one. The footprints lead into each one, then came out again, apparently not havign found what they were looking for.
In the last room, they had.
The bloody pawprints were much more obvious here, leading into a pool of blood on the floor. And there, on the sofa, was her father's body, deep cuts gouging his face and arms.
He was dead. She knew he was. Whatever that thing had done it had killed him and-
"Mattie?"
The voice was weak. Mattie ran over to him. "Dad?" her voice shook. "What happened?"
"He came here, a man. An elemental, apparently... Wanted to steal... Shapeshifting powers... Even though males of our race cannot use them, Mattie, they still lay dormant and ready for he taking. They are part of what keeps us alive, you know that, even when we cannot use them. Without them, I shall surely die"
"All this blood..." Mattie murmured, confused. Surely he shoudl be dead from blood loss by now anyway?
"Oh... Most of that's not mine. It was the first transformation. He wasn't ready for it" He let out a small chuckle. "He ran off after that"
"Dad, I didn't mean to be out so late" Mattie whispered, tears filling her eyes and splashing onto the sofa. "I found the club, with a girl called Ash. He found me there, took the key... That's how he got in. I shouldn't have gone"
"Ssh" he told her. "You're a teenager now, you're only doing what's natural. I wasn't too worried..."
"But if I hadn't gone he wouldn't have got the key and you'd be alright!"
"And if you hadn't gone, you wouldn't have made a good friend and the start of a new life for yourself, Mattie. Use it wisely. You don't need me any more now. My work is done..."
His eyes fluttered closed. "But I don't know what to do without you" Mattie whispered. He was gone. He breathed in one last breath and whispered "Just be Mattie"
And then he was gone.
((D8 I almost made myself cry...))
