Knowing there was nothing more I could do for him I sighed and looked over at Athena. "How ya holdin' up over there?" We all looked a bit worse for wear but I hadn't gotten a really good look at her as I had with some of the other flock members.

Athena looked at Fang with a timed smile. "I'm fine. Just some torn feathers along with some scratches and bruises." she told her. then looked at Hiro and back to Fang again.

"Whenever I manage to get my lazy butt up I'll help you with your wings." I wasn't taking no for an answer whether she liked it or not. I'd made the offer and it was rare for anyone to refuse but on occasion, it happened. Unfortunately for whoever refused, they would be held down and their wings would be preened against their will.

Athena smiled again. "Okay. Thanks fang." She said quietly, not to keep from disturbing the others, but that's how she normally was. She looked at her own wings and pulled a twig or two out.

Hiro looked up from the fire to follow their conversation, and, suddenly finding interest in the usual banter of the flock, spoke up. "I could do it," he addressed Athena.

Athena smiled "okay Hiro!" She said in her quiet joyous way. No one other than Fang of=r herself had ever preened her wings, but she had faith in Hiro. She slightly looked up at Fang half waiting for approval. But Athena was a big girl and can choose for herself.

I was surprised to say the least when Hiro offered to help with the wing maintenance of someone else. It was a big step for him and I was quite happy. Maybe he'd be coming out of his shell much sooner than I'd once thought. Even though I quite enjoyed our little cuddle time, I was willing to let him go, and unfurled my wings so he could get up if he chose to. "Alright, go for it kiddo."

Hiro stood and folded his wings against his back, walking quietly over to sit by Athena. As he began gently preening her wings, he knew his hunch had been correct. Now that he was concentrated on something else, his headache was all but gone. A light flush crossed his face at the change in proximity to the fire, but he soon got used to it. He also found out that he quite enjoyed the feeling of feathers, much more than he thought he would. He threw each of the dingy, broken, or already loose feathers into a small pile to his left, taking great care not to pull the wrong ones.
