Atlas leaped about a foot in the air when the first explosion went off, a few hundred yards to his left. It rocked the ground, shattering trees and throwing dirt into the air. With a jolt, he realized that Kiandra was over there. He heard her calling his name. Throwing his bow onto his back, he ripped off a strip of fabric from the bottom of his shirt and tied it around his mouth and nose to cut the smoke. His throat itched from the smoke, and his eyes watered like mad. Coughing and gagging, he sprinted to where Kiandra laid, her head resting on the grass. He knelt down and picked up Kiandra's limp, sleeping body.
She wasn't too heavy, and Atlas staggered away, back towards the cave.
He had jogged/stumbled a few dozen yards when another explosion went off 20 feet to his right. He yelped as he fell to the ground. Kiandra slid off his back, and Atlas tried to pick her up again. Cursing, he staggered to his feet, only then noticing the stinging, burning pain on his right side.
Sneaking a glance, he saw that the skin was burned pretty bad. It some places it was bubbling, and blood already wet his shirt. It hurt to move his face, and when he pressed his palm upon it, blood speckled his palm. He gritted his teeth and growled, walking closer to the cave, now dragging Kiandra behind him.
"BELLA!" he hollered, feeling his knees weaken. He yelled her name again, his eyes drooping closed. It felt as if smoke was clouding up his brain. Making it harder to think. To act.
The smoke.
That was it.
Falling to his knees, he yelled the small girl's name once again, but he was so. Tired.
Sleep washed over him, and the rough sand leered up to meet his face.

I realized I was making Atlas a bit of a Gary-Sue.))

Bella ripped a piece of fabric off her sleeve and held it over her mouth, climbing down from the cave quickly. She grabbed Atlas's arm and started dragging him up to the cave. She finally got him up, after much coughing, gagging, pushing and tugging. She was glad Kiandra was in Atlas's grip, so she didn't have to leave the cave again. She collapsed on the floor, gagging. Bella grabbed a water bottle and drank some water, which seemed to help. She poured some water in Kiandra's mouth, then in Atlas's. She sat down, back against the cave wall, waiting for them to wake up.

Kiandra

She mumbled as she heard a growl. Her eyes shot open, though she felt she was still asleep. Atlas. His face. She reached weakly up to him, before he collapsed and his eyes closed. She slowly lifted her head to see the cave not to far off. She lifted herself up, feeling shooting pains all over. She yelped as she fell back down and looked at her leg. It was burnt. She looked behind to see the flames licking their way up the path. She looked down at Atlas. "Bella!" she cried as she slowly picked him up, and hung him over her shoulder. He was heavier, and it was worse with her leg, but she slowly made her way to where they would need to climb. She looked back again. The flames stopped at the edge of the forest, but she could hear howls and see the rustling of the leaves. Mutts. She climbed up herself, and then reached down for his body. He would have some scratches, but she dragged his body up the rock, to the lip of the cave. She huffed and puffed and collapsed next to his sleeping body, and she was out again

Kiandra

She gagged and spit out the water over the ledge. She opened her eyes, feeling the searing pain in her leg and arm. She looked around, and met a gaze with Bella. She didn't have the strength to smile. She tried to do something to show how grateful she was, but instead she just waved to her, and collapsed, her head resting on Mr. Smexy's arm. She looked over at his face, and thought about the ointment she had in her bag. She would help him later, once he woke up. But for now, she curled into his chest, not caring if it was awkward or if he would be freaked out. She was glad they were both alive. She buried her face in his burnt jacket, and closed her eyes.

Bella smiled weakly at Kiandra. At least she was awake. Bella took another swig of the water before putting the cap on it and sighing.

I hear the first explosion, just as I was about to get up, too. A mutt comes running out of the forest and Aaron charges it, is he crazy? He displayed much more than just killing the beast, though, it was almost like it was one of his worst enemy's mutts. I grab my backpack and sling it over my shoulder, I still have my water purifier in there, too; that's lucky. I grab the extra water purifier and the container of food. Now I realize just how hungry and thirsty I am, but now is no time to eat or drink. I put the food and water and tuck them in my belt, and grab my throwing axe and take the dagger Beck gave me out of the ground. I still need that. Aaron's just finished killing the thing. More mutts are coming, and I see explosion after explosion in the forest. Well, that leaves one choice - the caves. "Aaron, the caves!" I start running towards the river, the only way we can get there. I hope their aren't mutations in it.

Aaron

He grabbed a few packs, his spear, becks spear, and the sword. He strapped them all into place so he would have his arms freed. He turned to Sophia and quickly ran after her. He then picked her up easily and swung her over his back. He laughed a little as he ran for the river and leaped. He landed in the middle, and swam across, feeling pains all over. There must have been like jelly fish. He shook it off, and set her down. "Which cave you want?" he smiled as he looked at the various caves. It was then when the stings started getting worse.

Gasping, eyes widened in surprise, Atlas scrambled upright. He blinked rapidly a few times, his eyes adjusting to the dim light of the cave. He was breathing heavily, and he coughed out water to the side. His face stung and burned, a reminder of the past half hour. His eyes darted around the cave, until they settled on Bella. "How long was I out?" he asked, his voice a weak croak.
Only then he noticed that Kiandra was sleeping on his arm. In his desperate scramble, he had accidentally shoved her off his chest. A section of her hair rested in his palm. He felt a blush rise in his cheeks, and for once he was thankful for the burns. They would hide his embarrassment.
He coughs again. "Got any water?" he croaks to Bella.

Bella nodded. "You can have the rest if you need." She held out the water bottle. "You were out for about... mn, a half hour, maybe." She said, watching the explosions warily.

Atlas drank gratefully, swallowing large mouthfuls of water. He wiped off his mouth with the back of his hand. "Think the explosions got anyone?" he asked.

When Aaron puts me down, for a second I just stare at him in disbelief, I guess there's either another advantage or a disadvantage to me being so light. I get up, I would normally laugh in this situation but in this case, it's far too serious, for me, at least. I see the red marks all over Aaron and guess there were something in the water, they looked like jellyfish or blue-bottle stings. Aaron's strong, he can tough it until we get to a cave... I hope.. I walk towards the face of the canyon and ask. "How fall can you climb?" I can't help thinking this may just be the one area I could best him in, and a smile appears on my face as I look back at him.
