When Jax landed here about six months ago, it was a snap decision to stay. Tomberton was the typical Maine town with a nice cliché touristy main street, and quiet secluded houses nestled into the woods. However, when he had stumbled upon it in the middle of winter, and was more than a little surprised by the fall colors. Simply by asking he soon learned that this was the way Tomberton was all year, and he was enthralled by the perpetual autumn that clung to the town. After spending a few days at the local hotel, which was cheap, thanks to it being off-season, he spied a for rent sign above a little grocery store at the end of the square. Not really having a plan for the future at that point, it seemed like the perfect opportunity, and he sold his car to make the security deposit.
His landlady was the chubby Asian who owned the market downstairs, and apparently the rest of the building above. Though she was somewhat suspicious at first of the young man who seemed to come out of nowhere, he had cash and no pets, and in the end that was really all she needed to know. The little efficiency wasn't much, just a kitchen, bathroom and a single large room that served as everything else, it was his and his alone, and he loved it because of that. Moving in was easy, since he didn't own anything but a bunch of computer junk, and he has since bought a couple of pieces of furniture from the local consignment shop so he at least has a place to sleep and a table to work at.
Or at least pretend he was working. Which was what he occupied his time with at the moment, surfing the net in one window and doing homework in the other. It's not like his homework required more than two brain cells to complete anyway, so really most of his attention was on what was going on in his browser. Flicking through page after page of tumbler images and following random threads to see where it would take him, or playing flash games and trying to pick apart the action scrip to complain to the developers. He wasn't a mean person online per-say, he just enjoyed telling people what they did wrong and how to make things better. It isn't until much later in the morning that he realizes he hasn't eaten anything yet and gets up to scavenge the fridge. Not surprisingly, it's completely empty since most of what he eats comes in the form of pre-packeged servings, or is purchased from one of the shops in the square below. Rather than going to the bother of making up a package of ramen, he decides to go out and get something better.
Putting on his coat, he walks down the creaky wooden stairs and heads up the square, making for the little bakery on the corner. The wather is cool but pleasant, and the fresh air is somewhat invigorating, so he finds himself humming as he nears the doors. Only to be disappointed in finding it closed. With a sigh, Jax turns around and pauses, trying to decide what to do instead. The bakery was one of his favorites, and he hadn't considered a second choice before he left.
As is normally the case when he is in doubt, he takes out his cell phone and pulls up google maps. Waiting for the search results to fill in, he starts walking, still looking at his phone. Leaves crunching underfoot and squinting to see the screen in the sun, he very nearly ends up walking into Chris and Opal where they stand talking on the street. Startled, he looks up and is about to just mumble an apology and be on his way when he recognizes one of them as the girl from the bakery.
"Oh hey, sorry... Umm... Oh, hey, don't you work at the bakery? I didn't realize it was going to be closed today." He says, nodding acknowledgment to the boy she was talking to, as he doesn't want to seem overly rude.
