when his sudden presence caused a startle, teilo felt a little pang of guilt. he had never endeavoured to frighten him - quite the opposite, in fact, and regret came until the younger boy seemed to simmer, newly used to his presence.
for a moment, he wondered what was so frightening. of course, it may have simply been jumpiness, high tension; but he supposed that the grand scythe that he held lethargically in his right hand wasn't much by way of comforting images. he had forgotten about it, in honesty, holding it and not really acknowledging it, but once focused again, he noticed a notch in the centre of the snath and pushed on it.
in a moment, the offending weapon had shrunk down - somehow shifted itself into a pocket watch, sitting squarely in the centre of his palm. "oh," he muttered to himself, moderately surprised. "that's... efficient."

his attentions turned back to the boy. "i've never played. i was actually expecting a board game. something like... you know, risk. or snakes and ladders. trivial pursuit. but we're in a forest, and i don't see a dice anywhere, so... i think i guessed wrong." he was joking, trying to lighten the tension on his shoulders. other things. that was telling. interesting, even - but he was against the very notion of prying, and so settled to nod sympathetically.

"i have a very good poker face," he said. "just because i'm nervous doesn't mean i couldn't clart someone. i'd probably be better at it." teilo flipped the pocket watch in his hand. "oh, you know. growing political tensions ,uhm... orangutans being classified as critically endangered, freud-frightening dreams, and i had some food today that's really not settling. might have to pop off for a quick chuck before i get into the whole... combat thing." he slipped in the mention of a dream casually, aiming to gauge his response from it rather than asking outright. "i'm teilo, by the way. i don't know your name."

before he could garner a response from aydan, it appeared that there was a newcomer in their midst. he span to the noise that was his name, eyebrows raised, smile already growing. "oh dear. go on, show me how it's done, burnsy. i do beg for your vast, impeccable knowledge." though it sounded snide, there was mischief brewing in the air.

when the show began and alex hoisted himself onto the axe, he nodded slowly, eyes wide. "gods. you're just... you're so impressive, alex. has anyone ever told you that? graceful, calm... i'd even venture to say you're humble. incredibly modest." he paused, turned to aydan, and in a low whisper, said: "watch," - like he was in on the joke, like he wasn't just watching two glorified children peacocking in front of one another. he wanted to make everyone feel welcome. a bit of lighthearted troublemaking was the best way to do so. then, he spoke up. "careful burnsy, you might pull a muscle."

he heard the whine of the branch - he knew it was going to snap. the cold had stiffened the wood greatly, made it brittle, unreliable - this was something that he was accustomed to, having grown up in not-so-sunny cork, but that he supposed may not have been common knowledge for others. when a gust of wind, concentrated and perfected, battered the weakest point of the branch, orin feigned a look of shock.

of course, because he was not a cruel or sadistic man, the manipulation extended further to creating what was essentially an air cushion underneath alex's feet. if he fell, the last thing he wanted was for the boy to be hurt. minor embarrassment for the sake of a little laugh was the only goal here.

|Mirabelle Everhart|17|She/Her|Aphrodite|Head Counselor|Location: Forest|Tags: CTF Group, Ophelia|

Mirabelle's perceptive gaze searched the crowd until she spotted Ophelia's trademark patchwork armour off to the side. She swiftly slipped through the mass of moving bodies until she reached her cabinmate. "Hey there!" she greeted her, with much more genuine cheer than she'd had earlier. "Oh, um, I sorta have something to ask of you," she started a bit awkwardly. "Would you mind... maybe taking over my duties as Head Counselor while I'm gone?" Mirabelle couldn't think of anyone more well-suited for the job. Most of her other siblings were self-centred brats (to put it bluntly), but Ophelia was different. Though she definitely had some personal growth to do, she seemed mostly genuine in her mannerisms - something Mirabelle couldn't even say of herself. Not to mention that she had a good heart - Mirabelle had seen it earlier that day, and many times before. She knew Ophelia had a lot of potential to make a great head counselor, and had full confidence in her abilities to handle the pressures. Besides, it would only be for a little while... right? Unless I don't return. Death was always a possibility when faced with quests.
Chiron's voice cut through her darker thoughts, returning her to the present moment.

|Juliet Pratten|16|She/Her|Hermes|Location: Forest|Tags: CTF Group|

Juliet was pondering her best strategy for setting up her magnificent prank when Chiron started to quiet everyone down.
"Alright," Chiron started when everyone had quieted down enough for him to be heard. He almost had to yell above the blustering winds. "I want a nice, clean game tonight. No maiming or killing." He glanced pointedly at the Ares cabin. One girl rolled her eyes and stuck her tongue out at him. Ignoring her, Chiron continued. "For those of you who are new to camp, the rules are fairly simple. Every able-bodied demigod is required to play. If you are ill or injured, please seek treatment at the Big House or the medical tent. The creek dividing the forest serves as the boundary line. You may range over the entire forest, but be wary - there may be monsters hiding in its depths." His eyes twinkled as he went on. "All magic items are allowed. Each flag must be prominently displayed, and can have no more than two guards. The guards are not allowed to stand within ten yards of the flag. Prisoners may be disarmed, but not bound or gagged. And last but not least - killing and maiming are not allowed. This should go without saying." The centaur paused for a moment, brushing some newly fallen snow off of his shoulders. "Myself and a few satyrs will serve as battlefield medics. Any injured should attempt to get to the medical tent, which is located towards the entrance of the forest near the boundary creek." He gestured towards the big white tent, which was just in view through the trees. "And now, the teams. Cabins 1, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 21 against Cabins 3, 4, 7, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 20, and 22. You may begin!"

|Chuck Oakes|He/Him|Satyr|Location: Medical Tent|Tags: Aiden, Emerson, Niji|

"Oh like, yeah, totally," Chuck said to Aiden as the other boy walked in. "With all this snow, people are like, totally bound to get hurt more than usual." Almost immediately as he said that, a daughter of Zeus came through the tent flap supporting the demigod who'd been claimed by Dionysus so casually earlier that day. "Already an injury!? Like dude, the game hasn't even started yet!"
Chuck leapt into action as Emerson explained the situation, quickly rifling through the various medical supplies until he found an emergency inhaler. He passed it over to the kid he recognised as a new camper, though he couldn't recall their name. "Like, here, take this," he bleated nervously. "I'll go like, grab some water." The satyr scurried off to a water cooler nearby - or, well, more like water lukewarm-er seeing as it was on a heating pad to keep it from freezing. He swiftly filled a cup with fresh water and brought it over to the dehydrated demigod, nearly tripping over his own hooves in the process.

Ophelia Rogers|She/her|Aphrodite/Cabin 10|Location: Dining Pavilion|tags: CTF Group, mentions: Mirabelle, Chiron

Ophelia blinked in surprise. "You want me?" She asked, perplexed at the notion. But her blue eyes only clouded up for a moment before they fell on something behind Mirabelle. She could hear Chiron talking, but she had heard this speech before. She only had to pay attention to the end, anyway.

She returned her gaze to Mira, a smile curving her lips as she quickly took in the idea. Head counselor... just for a bit, tough as she was, there was no way Mirabelle wasn't coming back. "Say, when does that go into effect?" She asked catiously, not wanting to sound too ready to take Mira's spot.
She waited for Chiron to finish, noting the placements before continuing.
"Because I've got a feeling Alex is going to-" She was cutoff when a bloodcurdling shriek pierced the air. She grimaced and looked to Mira.

Alex Burns|17|He/him| Aphrodite/Cabin 10| Location: Forest| Tags: CTF group, mentions: Orin & Aydan

Alex glowed at the praise. True, it seemed a touch excessive, but he would take what he could get. He pulled himself up for the 5th time in a row, steady as ever. Boy, those home workouts paid off!
He hardly noticed when his left side seemed too be a touch low. No matter, he could go on. It was when he rose for the 6th time that it finally gave, seeming to sigh as it as released from the burden of his battle axe's shaft.

Suddenly he was swinging to the right on his axe. Then he was falling. Alex screamed. "Aaaaaaah! Ow! Ow! Ow!" as he slid off, the tight grip he'd had burning his palms as they came off.
The ground was softer than he thought it'd be, and probably didn't warrant all the shrieking he'd just done, but Alex didn't care.

He lay on the ground a moment, wondering if he should just start off toward the medical tent, but he realized that too many people had seen him for that.
Instead, he popped up and gave a gallant bow. "That's all for tonight folks, have a great evening!" He called, as if his theatrics had been planned.
He then set about retrieving his axe from the tree, as the blade side had managed to get caught in the other branch.

**fixed grammer...Hank and Aggy are coming! Just need to wrap this up first**

Aydan Tags: Alex and Orin Location: Forest

Aydan rolled his eyes I'm at a camp full of idiots he thought to himself. Though watching these two show off their strength made him realize he didn't have much of his own. "so your Orin... and you are?" he said pointing to Orin then slowly pointing at the other camper who had just fallen on his butt. Aydan had to hold back a snide laugh which resulted in a slit second smirk. He was shocked that the boy on his butt didn't sense the branch beginning to break. "Also... you should of known that the branch he was going to break." he said finally letting the laugh slip not being able to hold it in anymore. He listened as there was announcement of teams. "I'm in cabin 11,I don't suppose either of you are on my team?" he asked the two boys. It would be nice to know some people on his team.

Jamie Wallace|16|he/him|Iris|Forest|tags:Teilo, CTF group
Jamie watched as the boy shrunk his weapon down into a much less formidable pocket watch. It must’ve been a new weapon, to him at least, because he seemed quite surprised. “Demigod weapons,” Jamie smiled and shook his head. “They always have some weird trick.” That wasn’t entirely true, he thought after he’d said it. His knife didn’t do much more than look pretty with it’s reflective blade and intricately patterned handle, but that was fine by him. It was a pretty useful weapon as well, but he didn’t often use it as such.

He laughed at the idea of playing a board game at camp half blood. “Yeah, we don’t really do that around here. Though if we did, I’m sure the Ares campers would find a way to make snakes and ladders just as violent. Probably with like...real snakes or something.” He said, only half joking, because he was pretty sure they would.

He nodded at the boys next statement, his eyes flicking to the pocket watch then back up to his face. He laughed at the list of reasons he gave for being nervous, though his smile quickly faded as soon as he heard the words ‘frightening dreams’. He didn’t hear much of what the boy said after that, his brain had latched on to that one thing. It was possible he just meant some regular unpleasant dreams, and nothing of the prophetic quest-type dreams Jamie had been trying to avoid all day, but nothing ever seemed to be normal around here and he figured it wouldn’t hurt to ask. “Frightening dreams?” He asked, raising his eyebrows. He quickly realized that he might come across as rude or nosy for asking, but he was too curious to let it go. He’d assumed everyone else who had had the dreams was happy or excited about it. He hadn’t considered someone could be just as terrified as he was.

His attention was drawn back to the conversation as the other boy introduced himself. “Jamie,” he said. “Nice to meet you.” He jumped again at the sound of a scream, his eyes quickly going to the boy on the ground who seemed to have fallen from a tree. The boy got up quickly and seemed to be perfectly fine, but Jamie’s heart was still pounding in his chest. He was really not looking forward to this game. He turned his attention to Chiron as the centaur began speaking, biting his lip nervously as he listened to the mentions of monsters, maiming and killing. At least he was on the same side as the Ares cabin. He definitely didn’t want to go up against one of them.

Augusta Reynolds|17|she/her|Hades|Forest|tags:CTF group
Auggie still stood off to the side, away from the other campers. She flipped one of her knives absently, tossing it in the air and catching it again. She wasn’t worried about cutting herself, she was so used to her knives by know she could throw them with her eyes closed, and she was wearing leather, fingerless gloves that would mostly protect her if she did slip up. She listened to Chiron speak with a blank expression, though she was eager to start the game, and she rolled her eyes when one of the Aphrodite campers made a dramatic show of falling from a tree, screaming much more than was actually necessary. This is why she liked to avoid her fellow campers.

if only i could keep you in my pocket
to give me some diagnosis of why i'm so hollow
please give me instructions, i promise i'll follow
i tripped on my ankle and fractured my elbow
but doesn't that mean that the tour's gonna sell, though?
i try to explain the good faith that's been wasted
but after an hour, it sounds like complaining
wait, don't go away, can i lie here forever?
you say that i'm better, why don't i feel better?
the universe works in mysterious ways
but i'm starting to think it ain't working for me
doctor, should i be good, should i be good this year?

|Mirabelle Everhart|17|She/Her|Aphrodite|Head Counselor|Location: Forest|Tags: CTF Group, Ophelia, Alex (mentioned)|Team 1|

Mirabelle winced as Alex's piercing shriek rang through the air. I swear, if he hurts himself doing something stupid before the game has even begun... She shook her head, though she couldn't help but laugh at her cabinmate's silly antics. Alex's behaviour aside, she turned back to Ophelia. "You're a natural leader," she assured her. Genuine compassion sparkled in her blue-grey eyes. "I have it under authority that we leave tomorrow morning, so long as we figure out where we're going first..." she couldn't help but cringe at that. "Anyway, the quest group will meet up after breakfast. Chiron's making an announcement about it at the bonfire after the game. So... I guess you'll be interim head counselor as of tomorrow." Her face grew suddenly serious, and her gaze turned almost distant and sad. "Listen," she said softly. "If I don't come back... take care of them, okay? I know our cabin can be... difficult at times. But they're..." she sighed. "They're family." She cleared her throat, forcing a smile back on her face. "Anyway, let's go meet with the rest of our team and see if we can come up with a plan."

|Juliet Pratten|16|She/Her|Hermes|Location: Forest|Tags: CTF Group|Team 2|

"YES!" Juliet exclaimed, hearing the Ares cabin was on the opposite team. A few nearby campers cast suspicious looks her way. "I am just, so pumped to play Capture the Flag!" she amended, though internally she was ecstatic. She noticed the large crowd starting to divide into two groups, so she hurried over to join her cabinmates in the huddle.
"Alright team!" she exclaimed, though her voice was hushed so the other team couldn't hear her. "So, what's the plan? Where we putting the flag?"

"Sounds like a plan--" the entrance of two other campers cut off the remainder of his statement, his job at the medical ten beginning sooner than anticipated. Aiden immediately recognized Niji, as they'd met earlier that day, and Emmerson, one of the few children of Zeus lingering around camp. Unlike the satyr, bless Chuck's heart, Aiden kept a level head in the situation. "He'll be alright dude, calm down." Aiden passed the water to Niji, silently acknowledging Emmie's request to stay with him. "Don't drink it all at once." He advised the new camper. "Take small sips to start with and let it settle in your system. You should start to feel better in a few minutes, but wait for at least thirty before joining the game." Dehydration was pretty common during training or camp events, especially in the mid-summer or winter. Though, campers weren't usually affected until they, you know, actually started training. There weren't any early skirmishes, were there? Aiden doubted it. Chiron wouldn't allow it. Instead, he pinned the blame on Niji's asthma and left it at that.

"that's pretty tidy." he said, regretting the slang as soon as it came out. a slip of the tongue, a taste of home. "i was worrying about having to carry that around." so much wasn't a lie - it was a formidable weapon, one that he feared taking outside of the realms of the camp.
the quest, he realised, was becoming more of a certainty than a fear. it loomed, a shadow cast over him, and he was uncomfortable with how quickly he was acclimatising to the whole scenario.

"snakes and daggers," teilo offered, a smile coming to his face. "land on a snake, you get bitten, land on a dagger, you get stabbed. i think that could really work out. sounds like a real team game. up the ante a bit." he rubbed his nose, which burned a tad in the freezing evening air. there was still tension rising, the forest becoming somewhat of a pressure cooker, all of the campers frogs who were unaware that the water they had been dipped into was coming to a slow and painful boil. it was frightening. he would give it that much.

his gambit had paid off, as it appeared, because jamie's attentions were drawn to the mention of the dreams. just the look on his face told teilo that he knew exactly what he was talking about, the question serving only as a confirmation, a question of whether he was biased, confused - and all of a sudden, he felt kinship with the camper. "yeah. kind of like this, actually. cold. more hilly, though," he said. "i hear it's very popular. no idea what to do about it, though." he pulled a bit of a face, then smiled when the introduction came. "good to meet you too, jamie."

their nice greeting was interrupted not only by a harrowing shout - which turned out to be nothing - but also by the announcement of teams. "team two." he said, hearing the shout of a curly-haired irish boy that he could only describe as loutish, leading him to raise his eyebrows. "are you on... i don't know your parent. hypocritical. i don't know mine. but the situation of my bed says that i'm on the second team." he did hope for the other to be on his, given their newfound common ground, but it appeared that it was a lost cause. "i'm not shouting for my team, though."

he drifted toward the team that did not have the curly-haired boy on it, and found the girl he had helped aiden with. that was good. a familiar face. "i've got a bit of a... trick, if you will, that could... give us the upper hand." he was hesitant to speak up, but did so anyway.

it was like a scene out of a film - profound in its predictability, utterly wonderful. beautiful, in its way - it sent a chill down orin's spine. his plan had come to fruition, and he was grinning like an idiot. alex pulled himself up, the branch snapped, and then he was screeching for high heaven.
the air cushion appeared to have worked. the fall did not have nearly as much momentum as it should have - in all reality, it probably would have bruised his tailbone, caused a sprained ankle, but the air settled him quickly, making it far more gentle.

but he was a child of aphrodite, and a dramatic one at that. the theatrics were a given. "oh, no!" he called, rushing forward in feigned concern. he glanced back at aydan. "now, who could have expected that?" he punctuated it with a cheeky wink, then looked back down, smiling at the face below him. "still. it was quite good up to the blunder. it's these brittle branches. you just can't trust 'em." he did not reveal his involvement in the debacle, just brushed it off as smoothly as alex was attempting to.

he couldn't spend anymore time reaping the joys of his success, given that chiron was speaking. all attentions were suddenly focused on the centaur, eyebrows raised, little smile glimmering, and then an explosion of victory. not only with the ares cabin, but the huntresses - this would be good. in fact, this would be glorious. "it's christmas. it's got to be christmas. i don't know what all these summer campers are here for, because it is christmas. a white one, at that!" he said, to no-one in particular. then, he focused on alex. "good thing you didn't hurt yourself too badly, isn't it, burns? need you in tip-top condition if you're going to hold your own on the winning team." then, a glance toward aydan. "i hate to part with you like this, love, but it's time you plot out how exactly you're going to lose. later, though, yeah? we can discuss it all over a nice mug of nectar." he waved him off.

"team one! over here!" he shouted, musical tones carrying, and waved his arm for further impact. "hope you've got your molotovs at the ready!"
when they gathered, he was practically rubbing his hands together with glee. "hit me, laurel." he paused at the suggestion. "are we on the offensive or the defensive?" another brief moment of contemplation. "offensive, obviously. so - over the year, i read a bit of sun tzu. a little light reading on how to crush the enemy. i think we could be onto a winner here. no - i know it."
