James laughed, looking down at her shoes. He would hate them too. "Tell you what, then, when we're done here, I'll add a new obstacle to the course, since you love it so much," he teased.

"Arse," I complain, good-naturedly punching him before resting my head on his shoulder. "How long do you think we'll have to be here?"

James smiled when her head touched his shoulder. He felt a strange rush when it did, although his arm was also throbbing a bit where she had hit him. He had taught her too well, and now she knew how to throw a good punch.
"A month or so, at the most. I hope," he said with a sigh. He wanted to lean his head down on hers, but this was strange to him, and he decided against it. Still, he was happy like this.

"Me too. Missions are nice and all, but there's always that danger of never being able to see home again, you know?" I say softly. "I just hope this isn't one of those times..."

"Yeah," James agreed quietly. He clasped his fingers together, trying not to dwell on the plight they were all in right now. There was an assassin here, and likely they would have agents. One of the scariest things for a Ranger was not knowing who your enemy was, or where they were.

I sigh quietly, looking out at the gardens. The hardest thing by far is not knowing who I'm against. It means I can't just point and shoot, and it means I have to deal with going under cover and actually act like a lady. At least one thing I have going for me is that no one knows who I am. Or maybe against me. Take your pick.

"You're part of the Ranger family, though, Onyx. Halt and the others are some of, if not the best trained people in Araluen, and you're one of them. We won't fall to this assassin easily," James said, being sure to keep his voice as low as possible. He probably shouldn't have risked talking about the mission outside of the wing that Lina had placed them in, but he felt that it needed to be said.

"But I'm just an apprentice," I say, mimicking his tone as I sit up. "I'm not even close to finishing my training and death is still an option. Let's not forget Will Treaty."

((for a second there I thought you meant he died and I was very concerned because I did not remember that, but I get it now.))
The shade seemed colder when she pulled away, and the strange but happy feeling left with her. James looked down at his hands, then nodded.
"I know, but it's unlikely. And he was alone when that happened. Sort of," he added the last bit quickly when he recalled that Maddie was there.

"But she nearly died too. Two good Rangers could've been lost in one fell swoop," I say quietly. I look at my hands. "Sometimes I wonder what I've gotten myself into."
