Fawna blinked herself awake, startled that she had actually fallen asleep. Bengli shifted as she moved and got up, scurrying outside, like it was afraid of touching her. Fawna rolled her eyes, wild animals were always strange like that. One minute they couldn't get enough of being around you, the next they'd eat you given the chance. She pushed herself to her feet, groaning with her stiffness. She walked around the rock that she'd hidden in to loosen her muscles and to observe the damage done by the storm. The surrounding area looked completely different and if she didn't know that the storm had come from the north, she'd probably be lost and wandering until she died. Not that she wasn't wandering now. She sighed and went to retrieve her things.
She was hungry and thirsty and she wanted a bath. Bengli frolicked in the sand, obviously glad to no longer be confined by the sandstorm. Fawna didn't understand why Bengli hadn't seemed to drink anything since they'd met. Maybe the cat had been engineered to need next to no water, or maybe Bengli was getting from something else. Stuffing her badly abused blanket back into the bag which she had used as a back rest, probably why her back hurt so bad. Slinging it over one shoulder she looked around and head once again in a southernly direction.
After a while, she thought she could smell water. She stopped and blinked, thinking she was hallucinating. Bengli, however, raced forward, making an odd chirping noise. After some consideration, Fawna decided that she couldn't afford not to investigate. She was dehydrated and on the verge of heat exhaustion. If it was water, it would likely be an oasis which mean predators. She knew she needed water or her death was going to be a foregone conclusion. She crossed the last dune and looked down on the oasis. Luckily, it looked clear and only had a couple of palm trees on its west side. If she stayed away from the trees, she might be able to use the oasis without disturbing the spiders.
She circled the oasis until she was on its east side to avoid the trees and knelled at the water's side. Splashing her face with water, Fawna wondered if she needed to purify this water or not. Oasis were generally created by springs, which were pure but what impurities did the sand it touched have? She decided that it would be best to purify the water before she drank it. She wouldn't drink untreated water until she needed to. She sat about purifying it, first in the water bottle and then in the canteen.
