Life was not fair. Life was never fair. Those who thought it were deserved what was going to come to them.
Wiping furious tears out of her eyes, Addison sat by the fire with her cloak wrapped around her shoulders. She was still ill from the baby but paid it little head. They had taken everything from her. Her baby, her life. The man sat at the kitchen table eating the food she had prepared. He was disgusting. Money clinked as he counted what little they had left.
The young woman hated this. She had been far too young to wed, far to young to be a mother. She wanted to die. She did not want it any more. Addison needed a new life. A do-over. One that didn’t involve that man.
Shoveling his dark nose deep into the snow, Sam slowly made his way through the drifts. His destiny was close by. He could feel it. It ran through his bones and set his fur on end as it collected the falling snow.
A light shone nearby. He could smell the owners deer. Nearing the house, Sam stood up on his hind paws. Peering inside he looked for a moment and then dropped back to his front paws with a huff of satisfaction. In the house sat his future and he was determined to get it. However, before he entered he looked around some more. The animal did not smell of milk. The house was quiet and did not ring with laughter or happiness. Like many, they were struggling with too many mouths to feed.
Finding what he was looking for, Sam ambled toward the house. He has some talking to do. He wanted Sevilen and when it came to Sam, what he wanted was his.
Nudging the door open with his nose, it creaked open. She was sitting in front of the fire in a blue parka that almost mesmerized him. Snow blew into the open door and Sam stood on his hind paws, huge.
“I wish to speak with the head of this house.” His voice was loud and booming, demanding complete attention.

"Hm." Eli grunted. ""Blow, blow, thou winter wind, thou art not so unkind as man's ingratitude." He said. "Romeo and Juliet. I've read that a few times. Do you like books? We have a large library." He asked as he picked up speed, giving her time to adjust.
Sevilen stood and grabbed the fire poker and her mother and cousin let out shrieks of fear. High pitched and feminine. Sevilen though stood, pressing the tip of the ashy fire poker to the beast nose. "What business do you have in the house of poor men, Isbjorn?" She demanded. "You are not a normal animal to speak. Since you can speak I should guess you to be civil. Or perhaps the hunger is taking my mind at last. Either way, what do you want?" She asked.

Eli looked up, though he couldn't see her. "I am Eli." He said. "I think you will like where I live. Have you ever seen a place? Let alone one made of ice like it is stone?" He asked. "It's quite the sight to behold. I do not recommend licking it though. It tastes like salt." He joked.

Eli laughed again, a rough hearty laugh. "Hold on then Juliet. It will take a while to get there and I should hope you wouldn't freeze to death in this winter." He said as he kept gaining speed until he was like a one bear stampede, running with such great speed if a mountain came out of nowhere he couldn't have stopped before running into it. He tore though the snow sending it flying as if it were fresh.

Sam resisted a chuckle and instead allowed a low rumble of a growl to thunder through his chest. He could reach her easily; take her arm off even without the poker moving. She was arrogant and foolish, guarded and protective. He had already decided she was his but now he was even more pleased. He hadn’t wanted a princess by any means. He would only have to teach her to allow him to take care of her. However, he had the feeling she had enough spunk to take care of both of them through attitude alone.
“I have a proposition.” He rumbled again, voice dangerously low. Even lower than before. “One that would provide this household with the means to buy a male deer. A bigger home. More food. Safety.” The way she had immediately jumped up before anyone else and pressed the poker to his nose without any apparent fear had confirmed what he suspected. All she wanted was the good of her family with no regards to her own safety. That made things easier for him.
“However, if you are not interested as you clearly aren’t-“ He tapped the poker with a huge black claw. “I will be on my way.” And leave them to their… fun. Sam purposefully ignored her other questions. They weren’t important. Perhaps someday he would tell her but definitely not now.

Sevilen frowned and let her arm drop to her side. She looked back to her father who just stood frozen to the spot, jaw opened wide enough Sevilen could stuff her parka inside. Thank goodness this wasn't an attack, he would be useless. Or perhaps it was. Either way, it would be one less mouth to feed. She put the fire poker back slowly, steely eyes never leaving their arctic visitor. Her cousin slowly crept back with her parents and she yelped when her little brother came down and launched at the bear. Sevilen yelped and caught the boy. "LET ME ATTEM!" He yelled, waving his fists. Sevilen shoved him at his sister and looked at the bear. "What is your deal? We are in no state to refuse right now. I don't know what we can offer you but we can try. I'm sure you wouldn't make an offer if we couldn't hold up one end." She said as she came forward again.

Juliet giggled and held on to him tightly, she liked this bear a lot more than people. She wondered why he could talk and why he needed her, although she had heard about this before from a couple people. She buried her face into his pelt to avoid any sharp ice shards hitting her and rubbed her face against the soft fur.

A long time passed. They hadn't passed any towns, houses, anything. It was just a plane of ice and snow as far as the eye could see. Slowly like it was magic making it rise, a blue spire of a palace rose into the air. Slowly turrets and windows rose with it until you could see the top of the palace. Large rooms and blue-green doors started to appear. After a while it stopped and just seemed to swell larger and larger. Eli panted, black tongue hanging out. He composed himself and roared loudly, it seemed it would break the palace. Two animals, about the size of one of Eli's legs came and opened the door, bowing. They were human at the top, but their eyes were sideways at the pupil like a goat. They had thick curly red brown hair and yellow tinted horns coming out of it. From the waist down they had long goat legs, ending in cloven hooves. They had no clothing but a ribbon of an icy blue tied around their neck, so they shuddered in cold as they entered.
