The Last Mantis

Kevin slides his claw between the panels, prying a hole large enough for him to pass through. That was one advantage to the mutation that Aperture had left him with. He had avoided the other test subjects during his escape, preferring to watch in the hopes of finding a portal test. If he could find a portal generator he was sure that he could escape this prison. His mandibles click as his mind races, his feet carrying him through the space behind the panels. Soon he would find one of the portal devices, he can feel it. Or perhaps thats just wishful thinking. GLaDOS had increased the number of security drones that patrol the facility in the hope of exterminating him. The pest control squads always failed though. He wasn't like the other Mantis Men, he had retained his mind. Reaching the next test site, Kevin peels back the paneling and looks inside. He watches the subject for a few minutes before acting.

Where... am I?

Baker slowly twisted his head around, taking in his surroundings without registering most of what he saw. He was... in a white room. And he was encased in glass. And there were... things surrounding him. Things he couldn't remember the names of. Things that seemed out of place in the sterile-looking chamber.

That was all he could take in for now. His mind felt fuzzy, and there was a numbness in his thoughts that left close to no room for speculation, however idle. Indeed, it was all Baker could do to stay on his feet -- it seemed that, no matter how he positioned them, they always swayed in such a way that he was always in danger of falling flat on his buttocks... or his face. It was no wonder that he couldn't match the word 'toilet' to the toilet sitting near one of the glass walls of the chamber he was trapped in.

The man slumped heavily over the long, narrow thing that he had just crawled out of -- a 'bed' to those with their heads screwed on right -- and gripped it as hard as he could, so that he wouldn't have to rely on his feet to keep him upright. Taking deep, gasping breaths, he transfixed his eyes on a single point in the room and tried to dredge up some memories from the thick pudding of his mind.

My name... my name is... D... uh. David? No. Baker grimaced. This was going to be harder than he thought. Daniel...? Diego? Donald? ...wait, yes. Donald. Despite it being a relatively easy task to most people, Baker smiled a winning smile at remembering his name. He adjusted his position and continued. Donald. What's my last name? Donald.. Thompson? That doesn't sound right at all. I... um. He pursed his lips and furrowed his eyebrows, obviously frustrated.

This could take awhile.

Test Subject
Description: Alphonse is a 6' 1" boy with pale skin. He is quite thin and has light brown hair with slight natural highlights. His hair falls down to his small, pale chin. His eyes are a dull green and are very expressive. He has dark circles underneath his bloodshot eyes from lack of sleep. Alphonse's cheekbones are highly set and prominent against his face and his ribs and hip bones can be faintly seen. When he speaks, he also has a slight French accent due to his ancestry.
Designation(Name): Alphonse Roblin
Age: Approximately 18
Gender: Male
Bio: Alphonse was born into a family that didn't want him. His parents were young and weren't ready for a child. His parents searched for months trying to find a family that would adopt him. Several weeks before his birth, his parents came into contact with a man who worked at Aperture. The man informed them that the facility was in need of new test subjects and that a human would be perfect for the job. Relieved, his mother gladly surrendered Alphonse at birth to Aperture.

At the age of three, his testing began. An assortment of tests were tossed at the young boy and he did very well on each one. His normal testing continued for two years until 1998, the GLaDOS incident. The AI had taken complete control of the facility, forcing all the employees to test until they more or less died off.

Soon, GLaDOS discovered the actual test subjects and put them up to tests that pushed the very limits of human capability. Alphonse was selected to be one of the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device test subjects. He learned the way the portals worked and soon completed each test quite well.

As Alphonse matured into his early teens, he wondered why his life was like this and what benefit it had for anyone. He grew wary of the AI that spoke to him day after day, haunting his thoughts at night and keeping him from the sleep he desperately needed and wanted. Alphonse didn't know anything about the outside world, but was sure there was something beyond the walls of this damned facility. He had faint memories of voices, faces, and scenery. He had no clue who he people were or what the scenes were of, but he held on to those memories almost like a lifeline.

One night as he was lying in his relaxation vault, Alphonse had a thought: There had to have been others like him in the facility. Why wouldn't there be? He would be determined to find the others and possibly escape from Aperture with them. He waited several hours until the AI's voice sounded again and he was off to complete another round of tests. He walked into the chamber and searched for a hole in the wall, a vent, anything that could get him out of the chamber and on his way to finding other people in the facility.

Eventually, Alphonse found a hidden door on the wall that was left slightly open. He aimed his portalgun at an empty wall within the room and shot an orange portal. To his pleasure, the portal stuck. He then aimed again at a wall within the test chamber and shot a blue portal. He stepped through and continued on to find other test subjects. He could hear the AI yelling at him to come back, but he wouldn't stop. he wanted out of this facility and as far away from her as possible.
