Collin Oliver Cross.
The first thing was that the wind smelled of salt. Everything smelled of salt.
The second was that he didn't mind.
Looking out across the white-capped ocean, Collin could just barely see the top of Kuaka Volcano, smoking as usual. The fire Pokemon inside never let the flames go out, but neither did they allow lava to swallow the rest of the island. It was a delicate balance, and the people the islands had a long-standing tradition to keep it that way; a Volcano Celebration, as it were, at the start of the summer. Collin wondered if he had missed it this year, and hoped that he hadn't. One of the older women in town was famous for her spicy red lava cookies. Everybody liked them, even Pokemon. Pausing in his thoughts, Collin took a moment to wonder if she was still alive. He hadn't been home in years and years- everything was like to have changed.
Turning away from the ocean, the young man grabbed his knapsack from the bench and slung it easily over one shoulder. With unsteady steps he made his way to the front of the ferry, and grabbed for the rail when the boat rocked violently. It was a good thing he had kept his Pokemon in their balls for the crossing from Johto; Westing was known to become notoriously sick when near water. Collin suspected that this was because Lokik had once nearly drowned him in a ditch, but he couldn't speak to his Meowth and therefore didn't know for sure.
Once the boat stopped rocking, Collin glanced over the rail in time to see a Wailord dive out of sight. He smiled, and then his smile broke into a laugh. It was the perfect homecoming, to see a Wailord on the crossing. With a crackle of static, the captain's voice came over the intercom. "All passengers who are disembarking at Tui Island, prepare to leave the ferry. I repeat, this is the call for Tui Island."
The boat slowed as it entered the harbor, and Collin hitched his knapsack up once again. There was a small group of people gathered on the dock already; was he late? Would he be the last of the little group to arrive? He had only spoken to his old friends sparingly, through letters or the occasional phone call. Most of the time he was unable to communicate with them, since Whitney was always having him go off and capture Pokemon in different regions. To toughen him up, she said. Give him a bit of experience in the world. He would have preferred to stay in the Gym, truth be told. It was safer there.
"Welcome to Tui Island. We hope you have a nice stay here in the Huia Isles!"
Collin cleared his throat nervously, then hitched up his knapsack one last time and walked down the ramp. A few people were ahead of them, and so he wasn't able to see who else was on the dock right away. Once the others wandered off, though, he saw that he had been right. It was them. He didn't know if he was still allowed to call them friends, since he hadn't rightly seen any of them since he left the islands for Johto. He should have planned something to say, some impressive first words. But he couldn't. There was no pretending with these people, that much he remembered. So instead, he walked up to the group and just said one word.
"Hey."
