This part of the school was much more luxurious than the passages frequented by most students. The professors lived here, in opulent apartments, private summoning chambers, and offices crammed with unusual treasures from distant lands, books on every conceivable subject, and flocks of sub-As teased and terrorized by type As and crap.
The door to one professor's office was open, and words could be heard drifting out of the opening, although only one side of the conversation was audible. "That's what I understand, sir."
Murmur, murmur?
"Of course not, it would be far too risky."
Mumble, mumble?
"No, I have not tried it on an A-summons, merely a sub-A. It was successful, but the more advanced mind may prove difficult."
Murmur. Mumble mumble.
"Good point, sir," James Danovich admitted. He was an unremarkable boy, all in all. Dark hair, uncertain ancestry, a lack of any noticeable scars, and a sort of scrawny height that reminded those who met him more a stick of basal wood than a stone tower. His hands were nervously fiddling with his notebook, seemingly unnerved by the thought of binding an A-summons with an experimental ritual. He wore a small, delicately jeweled ring about his thumb, and his clothes (though neat, as usual) were cheap, befitting a lower-class summoner who had not the willpower to summon anything more powerful than a slug-shaped sub-A with a predilection for lettuce and the dubious power of guessing people's weight.
His professor sighed, his beard drooping. He'd grown it after an accident with an A-summons in his twenties; the reptile-chimera shaped creature had managed to slice his face nearly in two before he'd managed to banish it. "James, power does not come without a price. If you never take risks, you'll never know. Try it, someday." He handed the sheet of magical diagrams to his assistant, a small, levitating shrew-shaped sub-A, which hovered over to James and proffered the papers sulkily.
James stood and took the papers, ignoring the summons's surly face completely. He nodded reluctantly, then winced, and rubbed the ring on his thumb again, glancing out the door. "Yes, sir. I will try it... Row!" he snapped, angrily, wheeling around. "Where is Ley? Order, cancel set 4, superseded by set 9."
The enormous lemur, crouched on a cardboard box of advanced summoning texts near the door, shimmered into view. His overly mobile face contorted in a exaggeratedly confused expression. He swished his tail around himself protectively, and spoke. "What?" he mumbled, stupidly. "She -"
"Order, silence," James snarled. "I told you to watch her. With her mania for secrets..." he trailed off significantly. "I apologize, professor. I did not think to tell Ley to stay by my side today."
The professor shook his head. "James, if you don't learn -"
"I should go and make sure she's not getting into any trouble - I'll be back tomorrow with the changes - thank you again Professor," James blurted out in one fast sentence, rubbing his ring nervously, and fled. The professor shook his head sadly and returned to his papers. His gaze flicked up. The lemur remained nonchalantly perched on the box for a moment, calmly regarding him, before James' angry voice jolted the summons into action.
"Row! Order, come!" The lemur's eyes shrank to slits, his tongue stuck out and his ears drooped like melting chocolate coated waffle cones on a hot day. He jumped lazily off the box and padded down the hallway.
* * *
Ley squealed, an undignified (and biologically impossible) sound from the noble black bird and fled from the summons. This was definitely a type-B; she could feel the power radiating off it . Ley expanded her body as much as possible, to the size a slightly large raven, and zipped away from the cracks left by the feline creature. Something deep inside her, something engrained in the shape of a raven quivered in terror. She flapped her wings once, twice -
And the claws, the fingers, the talons hit her, pinning her to the concrete of the ceiling. She gasped for air, her beak opening and closing frantically, like a helpless, panicked bird.
[Ooc: Wildmagic Warrior, James might be interested in Lokik. Clever sub-as are his specialty, and he wouldn't be annoying to Lokik, (he'd probably work out some sort of pantomime code for the heck of it). Perhaps if Ley is injured or other incapacitated, he'd summon him? I don't know.
Kiro: James will appear in a minute or so. His ring is part of a empathy-connection he crafted to Ley. He feels her pain and fear in a muted way. Also, Ley is referring to Maira as an it, because she doesn't know its gender yet.]
INSANELY BUSY!
I am moving! For the next month or so, I am going to be so very busy.
If I'm on here, it's because I'm unwinding with writing or pets or whatever.
Please do not add to my stress, if you can. Your support is appreciated.
