Cara has no idea how she ended up in a house with several unusual roommates. Some of them tell her she played in the Alpha game, and the few memories she has of her past take place there. She remembers four other teens, two boys and two girls, and four younger kids that look like the ones now in her neighborhood. She recollects a land of sweeping sand dunes and strange windows that revealed events occurring in other places (Land of Sand and Windows). The others tell her the heart symbol seared into her wrist was a mark made by Jack, but even that name only stirs the faintest of fear-filled instincts.
