Simon nodded in assent, he should pay more attention to the road and less on his thoughts. But he was just naturally a good driver so he hated those moments when he made a mistake. Simon followed his friend into the house, first leaning his head back to look at the two-story high entrance hall ceiling, then putting his keys on top of Alex's box of stuff.
"You know," he said in a voice filled with awe, "I could get used to this." He looked around and walked into the next room which was full of Victorian-style cushy chairs as well as a plasma flat screen T.V. embedded into the wall. "The architecture alone makes up for all the dusting we'll be doing," he said, a grimace marring his face as he examined the room more closely. "Just how long was it since the last time someone's lived in here?" he asked, coughing at the end.

Jane was sweating. She was sweating. She never sweat. Sweating was unprofessional, it either showed you were under pressure or you couldn't defeat the elements. Of course, taking into account that it was a warm day and she was cycling while carrying more weaponry than was found on the average bodyguard, she conceded that it might be possible just this once that she was sweating. She didn't even count the mail, and was offended that somebody else's needs forced her to do such a thing. Maybe she should have taken another job.
As she approached the next house, walking up the walkway, she stopped. Looking up, she tried to see if this might be your typical ghost hideout. Of course it was almost impossible to tell with these new modern ghosts. She clomped up the stairs and slotted the post through the door. Turning back towards the road, she heard a noise beside her and her eyes followed her ears. A very young girl had just appeared there. Jane was already reaching into her bag for her lipstick as her brain processed what she was seeing.

Alex groaned in disappointment. "This place is going to be effort to keep clean." He said, collapsing in a chair to test it out. He grinned, sighing. "Excellent. At least the furniture's comfy." He pushed himself off the chair to go upstairs. "Want to check out the rooms?" He asked, going to the stairs without waiting for an answer. He bounded up, his messy hair bouncing slightly with every movement. He opened a door, finding a rather large bathroom. It was clean and white. He left, going to find out which room was larger. He grinned, flopping down on the double bed in his newly chosen room, complete with a TV mounted on the wall.

Simon trailed slowly behind Alex as he examined the structure of the building and the fancy wallpaper covering the walls. Slowly he plodded up the stairs. "I think you'll find both bedrooms will be rather large and comfortable, as that was the style back then," he yelled up the stairs. Finally he reached the top, passing by the open bathroom door. He passed the first door and moved on to the second one that was open. He knew Alex would leave the one he didn't want and shut himself in the one he "claimed" as his way of establishing his territory. His room was nicely furnished with an excellent view of the outside world from the windows as well as a small T.V. sitting on a table.

Jane pulled out her lipstick and then stopped, her hand floating in midair almost as if on it's own. The girl was very solid and very colorful. A ghost would look slightly pale and a little translucent. Just a human then, a silent and small human that could move around easily without being noticed. That was Jane's reasoning for how the little girl had snuck up on her. She hadn't materialized, become visible, or walked through anything at all. Jane applied lipstick to her lips as cover for her strange movements and bent low towards the girl. "Well hey there, what are you doing outside?"

Alex plugged in his iPod to charge it, turning it on and listening to it again. He sang softly along with the music as he lay on his bed, relaxing slightly.

Xaria lifted her head at the sound of yelling. He sounded knowledgable about her time and she smiled slightly, missing the way things used to be. She turned invisible, sinking through the floor and looking at the boy lounging on the bed in strange clothing and singing to a weird box. She shrugged, going to find the other one. The one that had yelled. She floated slightly, knowing that she would cause alarm if she walked on the floor like she usually did because her shoes clicked eerily on the floor. She walked through the wall, peering at the other boy and following him around curiously. He looked rather strange in his clothing, just like the other boy did but she was curious as to what the new invention in the corner of the room did.

Simon turned slowly, looking at the room from all angles. Quickly, he headed for his bedroom door and as he passed through the doorway, he felt a slight chill. He shook his head and headed to the adjacent room, rapping on the door with his knuckles before opening the door. "Do you feel a draft in your room at all? Because mine felt weird, out of place almost," he said, only mildly concerned as he sat down in a nearby chair.

Jane waited for an answer from the child, but she said nothing only stared. Eventually Jane's smile faltered and she continued speaking. "You're a very pretty girl, you know, I love your dress," she complimented. Secretly Jane actually loved kids and never missed an opportunity to teach herself how to interact better with them.
The little girl smiled shyly before whispering, "I can't talk to strangers," and rushing back into the house.
Jane shrugged, a little disappointed, and headed back towards the road where her bicycle still stood. She always forgot that nowadays, with all the dangerous people out there, parents had to be more careful with their children. A wave of guilt came over her as she realized that she could be included in the category of dangerous people. In fact, she had almost been a danger to the girl, mistaking her for a ghost.

Alex looked up, raising an eyebrow. He pulled out his headphones. "What?" He asked, the volume on high on his iPod. He could still hear the song and he paused it looking at Simon. "Didn't hear you, man. Repeat?" He sat up, stretching and realising he still had to bring all his belongings in from his car. He put down his iPod to the side, getting up to go do it but waiting to hear Simon out first. He shivered as he took a step forward and looked confused. "Okay... Mum must be talking about me."
~*~
Xaria followed Simon into the other room, watching them with interest, especially the one with the music. She jumped, almost squealing in surprise as he walked through her. Her eyes widened slightly, glad she couldn't be seen and glad she had managed to hold in the sound. She bit her lip softly, wondering how he'd take it. She sighed quietly in relief as he spoke again, not realising it was a ghost. It was a good thing most of this generation were skeptics and non-believers.

((*Insert a whole bunch of curse words here*. CS died on me right as I was posting my very long post. Time to re-write everything.
And sorry I was at church for a while.
Also I tried to convey that Simon had walked through Xaria but I guess I failed at that.))

Simon let out an over-dramatic and exasperated sigh. "I was saying that I felt an unusual draft in my room, almost as if a chill came over me. And I was wondering if your room was the same," he stood up, trying to emphasize his point. He was already frustrated that he had to repeat his reasons for barging into his friend's room. "And what was that about your mom?" he asked, now seriously confused.

Jane came to the last house on her route today. An old-fashioned, huge, Victorian house. She started walking towards it, giving it the usual once-over. She realized it looked just like those houses in the stories her mother used to read to her. This was the kind of house ghosts used to live in. Or maybe still do, she thought. It certainly fit the bill. Towering spire, dark colored outside walls, long walkway up to the house hidden behind trees. Granted, the trees were in full bloom as summer was only just dwindling, but they were still trees nonetheless.

"Over dramatic, much?" Alex rolled his eyes at Simon. "Usually, when I get horrible shivers, it's cause my mum's talking about me. It's weird because I just got the strangest shivers. Kind of like someone dumped a bucket of ice water over my head." He explained, scratching the back his head. He shrugged. "I don't feel a draft. Maybe it's just your room..." He suggested, shrugging. "I'm going to go get my stuff..." He said, leaving the room quickly. He ran downstairs to his car, unlocking it and starting to unload the boxes, leaving them in the hallway before returning to retrieve another.

Simon rolled his eyes at Alex to hide his anxiety. As soon as he left he was cautious. It wasn't like him to be superstitious or even believe anything was out of the ordinary. In fact it wasn't like him to believe anything at all. He smacked himself in the head, trying to get himself out of the weird stupor he was in. He tried to shrug it off and started heading down the stairs to unload his stuff as well. He couldn't wait to unload his laptop and check his e-mail.

Jane stopped in her tracks, a boy was coming out of the house and heading straight towards her. In her mind, she attempted to rephrase it. Of course he was older than a boy, and he was probably not heading towards her, though she assumed he could see her. She kept walking, after all, she was just doing her job and this guy was decidedly human. As she walked by him towards the house, she put on a warm smile, "Hello, new here are you?" Despite her lifestyle choices, she enjoyed talking to normal people, humans. She had nothing against them and they were often friendlier than she could ever be. Not that she didn't make an effort.

Alex looked up, unaware she was there. "Hmm? Oh, yeah... Me and a friend of mine have just moved in." He said, smiling warmly at her. He was a little bit awkward, not liking the fact that he was a new face around town and scratching the back of his neck. He always felt self conscious whenever he walked about. "I'm Alex." He introduced himself, holding out his hand for her to shake.
