((Huzzah! How's this?))
Claire Ashdown
Claire sat in her dorm room, typing away on her laptop. She was supposed to be writing a history essay for homework (Four to five pages on a topic of her choice--the American Civil War, more specifically, its possible outcomes different to what had actually happened--due in a week), but she'd finished that the day it was assigned. She was actually writing a science-fiction novel. She was already halfway finished with it, or so she reckoned. She didn't have the length set in stone yet. Goodness, but her life was boring! True, there were some bits that she wouldn't give up for the world--her adoptive parents, her friends at university, the silver fob watch that was the only relic she had of her birth parents--but that didn't mean she didn't want something--anything, really--to happen to her that was outside of the ordinary. Almost as if whoever controlled the universe had read Claire's mind, she was trapped in a column of pale blue light. She didn't panic, but she certainly was thrown off-guard. Out of sheer force of habit, she checked her pocket to make sure that her fob watch was there, as it always was. She tried calling for her flatmate, Catherine, but then she remembered that Cat was at the cinema with her boyfriend of three years, Jake. Claire was alone. She felt herself begin to float, still inside the column. She expected to hit the ceiling and come crashing down, but no. Before she even reached the ceiling, she was no longer in her dorm. Nor was she in the column anymore. But before she could check to see where she was, she was surrounded by men dressed as pirates. Complete with swords, eye patches, and the occasional wooden leg. Pirates, she thought. That's fantastic. Then one of the pirates hit her across the head before she had the chance to react, and she blacked out.
