Lady Elliot Island is a small, popular resort off the coast of Queensland, Australia. This out of the way tourist destination is home to abundant wildlife, but there is one species that has remained hidden since the age of the dinosaurs. . .
A tiny coral kingdom, home to a fascinating array of creatures, holds many secrets, none so valuable as the identity of the Teuthida. These plankton sized squidlets come in many different colours and patterns, and five different species. I was lucky enough to have been the first human to see these creatures, but that was also the same day that disaster struck . . .

A massive hurricane was heading towards Lady Elliot Island. I was snorkeling above the Teuthidian kingdom, although all I could see was beautiful coral and many species of fish. I was told by my friend that it was time to head back, especially since the water was becoming choppy. I took one last dive, hoping to find a lovely shell to take back, yet something out of the corner of my eye caught my attention. I turned to see a small humanoid creature. The tentacles on its head moved but not with the current, as did the tentacles near its legs.
I stared, not realising I was running out of air, and this little creature, no bigger than my thumb stared right back at me with beautiful green eyes. My lungs began to burn and I pushed myself up from the bottom. I broke the surface and breathed deeply. I looked for my friend and saw her swimming back to shore. I began to swim after her, but a wave crashed down onto my back as I swam over the sand bank.
I was dragged under by an abnormally strong current. It pulled me down and my head slammed against a rock on the reef bed. I became dazed and couldn't tell which way was up. As I was dragged along the bottom of the reef, I saw the same little squidlet swimming above my head. My head, once again, banged into a rock, and as darkness began creeping over me, the tentacled creature appeared in front of my eyes. It reached out its tiny hand and touched me on the forehead.
A bright white light engulfed me for second, and I watched as this being began to grow. It grew larger and larger and I tried to get away, but as I moved, my instincts tried to open my mouth for me to breathe. I waited for the water to pour into my lungs and for death to overtake me, but nothing happened. I reached up to touch where I believed my mouth to be, but found nothing. I tried to scream as realisation hit me like a ton of bricks, but no sound came out. I had no bones in my face. I was missing my nose and my cheeks and my ears. I looked down and saw a mermaids tail.
Panic overwhelmed me and I looked up at the squidlet. It was then that I noticed that it had not grown larger, but that I had shrunk. A soft, feminine voice filled my mind and I began to relax.
"Do not be afraid." I looked at the creature and I realised she was speaking to me. It seemed cliche to me that she would say not to be afraid, but her soothing tone had the desired effect.
"I have saved you. You are now a Teuthida," She spoke again. I tried to speak but the lack of a mouth made it impossible. Instead I tried to project what I was saying through thought. "What am I?" I asked.
"You have become a creature that has survived since before the dawn of man," the voice in my head replied.
"I don't understand," I thought back. The Teuthida grabbed my tiny little hand and we swam down in amongst the coral. . .

And so I was initiated into the tiny world of Teuthida. I was given my own home, my own little coral bed and little coral chair etc. I made many friends, and a few enemies. I was even introduced to the King and Queen, and I was given the position as the Queens hand maiden. Life is serene and sweet under the sea, but I miss my human life.
I have lived with the Teuthida for the past seventy-five years, and I have barely aged a day. The food we eat has special properties, endowing us with a few magical gifts, and some squidlets are more powerful than others. Until recently, the most powerful of Teuthida are the royal family and the healers, but a few weeks ago, the Kings brother returned and many fear his actions will lead to a revolution. . .
