The books are mostly male character dominated, always have been. It's partially a product of it's time in that respect.
it's not the movie's fault.
Yes they could have used more female actresses, but had them do what? And they would probably add little to the flow of the story.

I'm glad that they do add the chracter of Tauriel in the second film, because she is actually kind of the only decent female character in the thing. As bard's daughters don't really do much.

I think all She-Elf was saying was that all that was left of them was the memories that others held of them - very similar to the remnants of a dead person - and that it made her miss them.
