I've been thinking about this, and wanted to ask your opinions.

You know that Kíli gets shot by a poisoned orc-arrow, right? I mean, why would PJ do that? Even Tolkien in his own books intended Legolas to get shot in one of his drafts of FOTR, but eventually scrapped the idea in fear of slowing down the story and diverting attention from the main plot; so why do you think that Jackson added that plot twist; for suspense, or to more heavily imply the relationship between Kíli and Tauriel, what?
And as a separate question, how do you guys feel about the plot twists added to DoS (like the extended battle against Smaug, the extras with Bard, Kíli's wounds, etc.). Do you think the twists added excitement to the movie, or were just plain unnecessary?
