Chapter Nine The timeline of events so far is that Fireheart and Graystripe brought home WindClan, Whiteclaw died, and Bluestar gave them apprentices, all on the same day. Ignoring the fact that the two warriors probably need a day to rest and recover, and that Graystripe is still angsting over a death he had nothing to do with,
and that Bluestar gave two barely experienced warriors apprentices, we have not been given a moment to actually address the consequences of WindClan returning.
It's like Hunter was eager to get the WindClan thing over with so they could continue whatever bullock story they actually wanted, when WindClan's plot is actually much more interesting. The potential here could feed a hundred starving artists. If the second book had been about WindClan having to balance between standing on their own as a show to RiverClan and ShadowClan and keeping their fragile alliance with ThunderClan until their numbers can recover, on top of RiverClan and ShadowClan having lost their new hunting grounds and having to face the realization that they were willing to abandon one of their oldest neighbors for their own gain (and we have seen that these cats are altruistic, so it's a potential thing), would have been amazing.
But no, whatever. I'm the dumb one here. Erin Hunter knows best. Obviously. Let's talk about Cinderpaw, you guys!
But, hang on, there's no mention in earlier books that the ravine gives a great view of the trees. And a ravine is a ditch, so to climb out of it would make them level with the rest of the forest, not above it. That was weird. Why not just have her stare up at the trees in awe?
Also, how does she know what moonstone is? There's no indication that the kits are told anything about that other than it's where the leader goes. And she should have said "the Moonstone", since there's only one.
Cinderpaw quickly proves herself to be a handful for Fireheart, running off on her own curiosity and interrupting him with rapid-fire questions. I'm sure that she'd still be troublesome if an older warrior had her, but the fact that she's barely respecting her mentor is great. Kids can sense when an adult/teenager barely has a grasp on things, and they will exploit that mercilessly. Of course, because it's Fireheart, I'm sure he'll be the best mentor ever, but for now, I'll raise my glass in appreciation.
I can't remember a time where Bluestar ever played that trick on him (in fact, I don't think she was his mentor for more than a few weeks when he was older), but this is pretty charming, so I'll give it a pass.
Fireheart jokes that when Smallear was an apprentice, the biggest tree in the territory must have only been a sapling. If they aren't cut down or damaged, sycamore trees live an average of 200 years, and using our estimated Clan lifespan of 8 years, that means up to 25 generations have passed since the tree was a sapling. Cats are intelligent, but I have a hard time believing that they would actually know or care that trees grow from saplings. The forest of ThunderClan is full of adult trees, and I'm willing to bet that very few saplings make it past the acorn stage due to the lack of sunlight or space to grow. The only way they would know that the Great Sycamore was a sapling once would be from stories stretching back far enough to dwarf a feral cat's comprehension of time. To them, this tree should have always been how it is, and myths of its youth would be considered "before time itself".
Yes, yes, I know what you're saying. "I don't care. Please shut up about trees. You have better things to nitpick over." I hear you. I'll keep going.
Cinderpaw is introduced to Snakerocks and the Thunderpath, where she correctly identifies ShadowClan's scent from Brokenstar's attack. Given that it happened roughly two weeks ago, I can buy that she remembers them, but when Fireheart feels wary around "hostile Clan territory", I'm perplexed. The only reason they would be hostile right now is if ThunderClan actively did something to screw them over (and no, bringing home WindClan doesn't count). ThunderClan saved ShadowClan from their evil leader and offered a moon of peace, remember? If anything, they would greet Fireheart from across the road.
Anyways, the two go near Twolegplace and spot a pregnant kittypet. This cat is Princess, Fireheart's sister. Like with Smudge, I'm annoyed that he doesn't recognize her scent or appearance, but this can be waved away by saying that kittypets and their siblings may not recognize each other easily due to being separated as soon as they don't need milk. Of course, he dreams of her and realizes who she is in the middle of the night, which is utterly stupid and cliche, but it's Fireheart, so who cares.
