Yes, other pets than dogs are allowed. It says in the info that I usually favour dog, but really that's because they are generally higer in demand.

VR pets are awesome, '08 pets are awesome, everything that's in demand is awesome. Take your pick. If your pet is all three, well, then it's perfect.
