Well, here's a few things that I like that you could possibly incorporate into the design:
- Natural design/colours with unnatural accents
- Favourite colours are: Blue, White, Silver, Black, Brown, Tan, Purple (only a little), Plumb, Red.
- Favourite Patterns: I normally like natural markings such as stripes, spots, or patches - though I also like swirls, unique markings, and tribal markings.
- I also love having hair on my characters.
- With character designs, I like it when there's a contrasting colour involved - though it would probably only be used as an accent.
- I also like it when a character is based on darker themes. ^^

For theme, I was curious to know if you knew of Welcome To Night Vale? If not, then thats okay. ^^
Here's a couple of my favourite colour pallets that you can chose from:
