Usually in a scavenger hunt someone hides something and everyone else tries to find it. Oftentimes there will be puzzles or riddles and if you solve them you get a hint as to where to find it. First person to find it wins.

Another variation: Sometimes there are several items to collect, and the first person to get them all wins.
