Philosophical Rarity Survey

Postby Cygnetta » Tue Jan 25, 2022 5:19 am

I’m interested in how people feel about rarity and its function. Fill out the survey if you’d like, and thank you for your participation.

1. Why do you think there is rarity, instead of each pet being able to be adopted as many times as you want?

2. If you could change the site so that you can adopt as many as you want of each pet and item ever released (with a generous limit), would you? Why or why not?

3. Is appreciating the rarity of a pet shallow? Why or why not?

4. If you could get the main VR/OMGSR you’re looking for, in exchange for it becoming OMGSC and everyone having it, would you?

5. Think about your favorite pet on the whole site. What rarity is it? Do you own the pet? Does rarity play a role in your choice of this pet as your favorite?

Disclaimer: I am not advocating any change to the current system. If rarity ceased to exist, the site would cease to be a game, and people would not come on it. I’m just posing these questions so people can think about rarity.

1. I think rarity is the reason why this is a game and that people have something to trade based off of.

2. I wouldn't, simply because I think it ruins the fun of the game. I really enjoyed the process of going from a new player with barely any pets to today, where I have even omgsr and former "main list" pets.

3. Personally I really value things such as rarity and date. Again, I feel like it's pretty much the purpose of the game, if you play to collect pets. Rarity really is worth, because it is simply harder to get some pets than others.

4. To be honest, probably not. The process of working up until getting the pet is really interesting and satisfying.

5. My favorite pet on this site is the smiley, which is a 2010 rare. I own the pet now, and rarity only mildly effects my choice as it being my favorite. But, I do like the idea that the pet I love is decently rare. Although not my favorite pet, I do really want pets such as the sunjewel because when I started on this site, I kind of set a goal to get some former "main list" pets and rarity really played a role in that. (My ultimate goal would probably be all of the fruit/food urs and sunjewel.)

1. Why do you think there is rarity, instead of each pet being able to be adopted as many times as you want?
I think this would defeat the purpose of the trading and collecting aspects of the game; the rarities existing encourage people to collect more when pets and items are available and trade around!

2. If you could change the site so that you can adopt as many as you want of each pet and item ever released (with a generous limit), would you? Why or why not?
I wouldn't. Again for the reasons above; if anyone could adopt any pet or item, there wouldn't be any reason to trade since everything would already be available, or there would be loads of pets and items from people over-adopting. Over-adopting is actually the reason an adoption limit got implemented way back when.
However, I do support there being an item version of the december 18th pets. Rereleasing pets helps the trading scene for the ever-growing amount of users on the site, and since old items are so difficult to get a hold of, it would be helpful to put some of those back into circulation.

3. Is appreciating the rarity of a pet shallow? Why or why not?
Nope! There's a coolness about having something super rare that not many other people have. You shouldn't brag about it or put other people down for not having it, but I don't think it's shallow to admire something for being rare

4. If you could get the main VR/OMGSR you’re looking for, in exchange for it becoming OMGSC and everyone having it, would you?
Yep! Though, to be honest, I only want the UR Phoenix because I'm trying to collect all the chickens on CS ^^' I do really like it, but there are other common chickens I like better

5. Think about your favorite pet on the whole site. What rarity is it? Do you own the pet? Does rarity play a role in your choice of this pet as your favorite?
This one's kind of difficult to say. My favorite used to be the white lolita, but after having her for 8 years I kind of grew out of her. Now I think my favorite is just an uncommon from 2010, that I do own, because it's the first pet I ever saw on CS and I got attached to it! So no, rarity doesn't really play a role at all in what pets I like haha

1. Why do you think there is rarity, instead of each pet being able to be adopted as many times as you want?
Because it's the litteral only thing that makes CS sort of like a game. Without adoption limits, what would the purpose of this game be? Just adopt litterally everything, sort them out neatly in your groups and then what? Wait for the next month, get everything again and then what? Adoption limits and rarities gives us something to work towards, it's a challenge to get a complete collection and afterwards maintain a complete collection.

2. If you could change the site so that you can adopt as many as you want of each pet and item ever released (with a generous limit), would you? Why or why not?
No. For the same reason as said above. It makes the only gamified thing about CS void.

3. Is appreciating the rarity of a pet shallow? Why or why not?
No. And that's true for anything that's rare in this world, it's okay to like stuff simply because it's rare. I don't see how it's any less shallow to appreciate a pet because of how it looks to be honest.

4. If you could get the main VR/OMGSR you’re looking for, in exchange for it becoming OMGSC and everyone having it, would you?
Honestly? I don't know. But probably not. Again because it's a game and taking away the only gamy thing about CS would ruin it.
But I truly do hate the new URs, it's exhausting to keep up with them every year! So I kinda would take this deal if offered. x3

5. Think about your favorite pet on the whole site. What rarity is it? Do you own the pet? Does rarity play a role in your choice of this pet as your favorite?
My fave is the UR Tess cat, which is OMGSR. And yes, rarity is partly the reason why it's my favorite. The other part is because I'm a crazy cat lady and it's a gorgeous black cat <3
But you know, take away the rarity and it's just not as cool anymore.
Oh and yeah, I do own it.
I'm also really attached to the two cats in my siggy, and that's not because of their rarity what so ever. They're my little gatekeepers in my "Pets without a group" group <3

1. Chicken smoothie is a game about collecting. Without scarcity, there would be no reason to trade in the first place! The whole idea of different outcomes appearing at different rates would be basically for nothing if you could just keep adopting. It would basically just be a jpeg dress up site at that point.

2. Definitely not. Sure, a cute image of a cat that you can immediately download and put in your signature and dress up is fun. But when they each have their own id number and time limit for adoption, it makes it feel like your pet has some sort of worth, and that your trades and adoptions are really YOURS. Scarcity in it of itself creates value, which leads to a lively trading scene.

3. I don’t think so! The chicken-o items for instance I don’t really care for, but I appreciate them because they are so incredibly few. Another example: I have the nick unicorn, which is technically one of the rarest pets on the site, yet it has terrible demand and trades for way less than its rarity value. But I love and cherish it as if it were a tiger dog! I actually wish more people would appreciate pets like the omgsr rats and the mint tess horse for their rarity rather than their design. It seems like so many people are cought up with how they look that they forget how rare they are compared to other high value pets.

4. 100%! I am going for a complete spider and bat collection, and only need a few more very rares. I would still have the same satisfaction of “catching ‘em all” without having to save up and finding such hard to find outcomes!

5. My favorite pet is the UR Peach, which I own as of a week ago! I like it because if it’s design mostly, the uniqueness of a cute little caterpillar living in a peach is what drew me to it. I don’t think rarity really played a part in weather or not it was my favorite. A lot of the most unique, non-animal pets are OMGSR which kind of stinks, but a lot of my other most favorite pets are very common-uncommons.

1. Why do you think there is rarity, instead of each pet being able to be adopted as many times as you want?
I was here when there was no limit, and people abused it. I believe it was with the card dogs, when the Joker was popular, people were adopting HUNDREDS to try to get that one.

2. If you could change the site so that you can adopt as many as you want of each pet and item ever released (with a generous limit), would you? Why or why not?
No, as much as I'd like one of each, it would kind of defeat the purpose of the game. It was fun while it lasted, haha.

3. Is appreciating the rarity of a pet shallow? Why or why not?
No. That is what makes the pet popular sometimes. Idk.

4. If you could get the main VR/OMGSR you’re looking for, in exchange for it becoming OMGSC and everyone having it, would you?
Depends on which one. Probably not, but some get SO frustrating to find.

5. Think about your favorite pet on the whole site. What rarity is it? Do you own the pet? Does rarity play a role in your choice of this pet as your favorite?
I have lots of favorites, from OMGSC-OMGSR. I think my ultimate is the dark leopard Sept '08 dog, and I do have one. I think he's VR. His rarity doesn't play a part in it, I've thought he was striking since day 1.

1. Why do you think there is rarity, instead of each pet being able to be adopted as many times as you want?
Answer: I think there’s rarity so people can trade pets them with more ease & so there’s a balance of the rares in the game.

2. If you could change the site so that you can adopt as many as you want of each pet and item ever released (with a generous limit), would you? Why or why not?

Answer: No, it would ruin the system & there just wouldn’t be any goals to work towards IMO.

3. Is appreciating the rarity of a pet shallow? Why or why not?

Answer: I don’t think so as that’s what makes the pet popular & trading easier.

4. If you could get the main VR/OMGSR you’re looking for, in exchange for it becoming OMGSC and everyone having it, would you?

Answer: Yes!! I like pets for design, rarity is just a perk.

5. Think about your favorite pet on the whole site. What rarity is it? Do you own the pet? Does rarity play a role in your choice of this pet as your favorite?

Answer: The Cheshire Cat!! It’s a very rare store pet from 2012. I don’t own it but rarity doesn’t determine why I like it. I like it as I love Alice In Wonderland!

1. Why do you think there is rarity, instead of each pet being able to be adopted as many times as you want?
Then there wouldn't be a game as there wouldn't be anything to work for.

2. 2. If you could change the site so that you can adopt as many as you want of each pet and item ever released (with a generous limit), would you? Why or why not?
No since that sounds like a great way to bankrupt the site. Serves need money to run.

3. Is appreciating the rarity of a pet shallow? Why or why not?
Answer: No. People are allowed to like things for whatever reason they want, and if rarity is the main reason they like something, then so be it.

4.If you could get the main VR/OMGSR you’re looking for, in exchange for it becoming OMGSC and everyone having it, would you?
Yes, most of my pets are in favorites folder are not rare, I just like the design or more likely they are a dragon/unicorn.

5. Think about your favorite pet on the whole site. What rarity is it? Do you own the pet? Does rarity play a role in your choice of this pet as your favorite?

Hard to say, but I think I'll go with the PPS dragon cat, though there are a lot of very cool pets. I don't own it because that is more valuable then any pet I own and rarity is not the reason I want it, I just want it because it's so darn cute.

1. Why do you think there is rarity, instead of each pet being able to be adopted as many times as you want?

To create a demand/supply. Trading is a cool system, and a lot of users might play just to trade, who knows.

2. If you could change the site so that you can adopt as many as you want of each pet and item ever released (with a generous limit), would you? Why or why not?

No. Although it would be interesting, it would make some of the previously special pets not special at all.

3. Is appreciating the rarity of a pet shallow? Why or why not?

No. It's something big to work to to get an omgsr, no matter the value.

4. If you could get the main VR/OMGSR you’re looking for, in exchange for it becoming OMGSC and everyone having it, would you?

Yes. It's the UR Tiger and all the cheetah store pets, and having those would be great. I just love the design of them.

5. Think about your favorite pet on the whole site. What rarity is it? Do you own the pet? Does rarity play a role in your choice of this pet as your favorite?

OMGSR // UR Tiger // No // No
VR/R // 2016 Store Cheetahs // Yes // No
I have all my other big dreamies.

don't know if this is necroposting or nah since it's on the 2nd/3rd page

1. Why do you think there is rarity, instead of each pet being able to be adopted as many times as you want?
To make it a pet collecting game, add some level of difficulty to it. So that folks have to put in the effort to collect and get every single pet!
2. If you could change the site so that you can adopt as many as you want of each pet and item ever released (with a generous limit), would you? Why or why not?
Nah, to keep it a game still! And to keep it active and bustling, since swapping is a big part of getting new outcomes. I think a lot of us like the thrill and rush to get all your missing outcomes and loving a new outcome you decide you want to hoard. It's a simple but effective system.
3. Is appreciating the rarity of a pet shallow? Why or why not?
Maybe not, since it's often an appreciation of the work... but also, no doubt, often just for the sake of having a very rare pet. I don't think a lot of people genuinely want most old rares for their design, especially since they were new and Tess was just starting out compared to later designs where she very much improved. E.g., the toxic set imo isn't very appealing on the eyes color-wise. I'd say it's a complicated question based on almost every single word of the question and how you'd define it. Sometimes the appreciation is for the work one did, or for having a nice fancy rarity tag.
4. If you could get the main VR/OMGSR you’re looking for, in exchange for it becoming OMGSC and everyone having it, would you?
    Yes. Zero doubt.
The UR Longma, the Store Pitbull, and UR Lion are designs that I really, REALLY like and each complete something personal to me. The UR Longma for my Chinese culture-themed pets, the Pittie since I love pitbulls, and the UR lion is the original parent of the Valentine's lion family tree, which I really liked when I first joined. Honestly... if everyone was made to have a pittie on CS, I wouldn't complain at all haha
5. Think about your favorite pet on the whole site. What rarity is it? Do you own the pet? Does rarity play a role in your choice of this pet as your favorite?
    Image
Nope. I just really, really love this pet. Perfecto. Like almost it was made for me.
