Daddy, do you remember when we used to ride the carousel together?
The very first time you took me to the fair, I was captivated by the painted ponies that spun round and round. The old-time music drew me in closer and closer as I watched the happy riders laughing. I turned to you with my huge blue-grey eyes, ready to beg and get down on my knees. But before I could say anything, you smiled and took my hand, leading me over to the man selling tickets.
"Two for the carousel, please," you said in your deep, warm voice.
The ticket man nodded. "Certainly, sir. That will be four dollars, please."
You gave him the money, and he gave you the tickets. He winked at me as we started to walk away. "Enjoy, young lady."
I waved at him before turning my attention back to the magical ride. When the music stopped playing and the painted ponies stood still, I gripped your hand tightly as we stepped up onto the wooden base.
"Which one looks the prettiest, Honeybee?" you asked me.
I bit my bottom lip, surveying each horse before tugging your arm and pointing. "That one, Daddy. The white one with the blue and gold saddle."
We made our way to my beautiful horse and you lifted me up with your strong arms. I scrambled onto the saddle and beamed at you.
As soon as everyone was settled in, the old-time music started to play and we began to go around and around.
"There's Mommy!" I shrieked, waving excitedly at her with my free hand. She laughed and waved back as we whizzed by.
You held my hand the entire time, never once letting go.
Today, I took Marcello to ride the carousel for the first time.
He looks just like you, Daddy. The same sparkling eyes, the same dark brown hair, the same warmness to his voice that you had. I wish you could see him, you'd be so proud of what a little gentlemen he's turning into.
When we got to the carousel, he looked up at me with the same eager expression on his face that I used to look at you with. We bought two tickets and he grabbed my hand, leading me to the exact same horse that I chosen to ride all those years ago.
"This one, Mommy. Grandpa told me that you used to ride the white one with the blue and gold saddle. I think he would want me to ride it, too."
"I think Grandpa would have liked that very much." I told him, helping him into the saddle. As the old-time music started to play and we began to spin round and round, he tilted his head back and waved at the sky.
Tears shining in my eyes, I asked, "What are you doing?"
He looked at me and smiled his little-boy grin.
"I'm waving to Grandpa, Mommy."
