He stares back, a grotesque grin on his face. "Of course you do."

I feel my face grow hot. "I do. I want to...I want.."

"What do you want?"

I bite my lip, run a hand through my hair. He mimics me. "I want...I want to kill you."

Silence.

"Oh you do, do you? Well why don't you?"

Good question. I hesitate. He always knows how to catch me off guard. I flounder for something to say, then come short. "I hate you." Is the whisper that leaves my lips.

He's laughing at me. "I hate you, I hate you, I hate you." He sings, his eyes taunting me.

"I wish I knew how to hurt you properly." I snap. "Then you'd be sorry."

He feigns fear. "Well, until then, I'm just going to watch you go black inside."

"Daven? What are you doing in there?"

My mother.

With a start, my attention is ripped back to where I am. My bedroom.

I stand up, and put the mirror back in it's place.

I had gone out surfing with a couple of friends one day. All of my friends were in relationships. I guess I was the odd one out. My friends took it upon themselves to try to get me to hook up with someone. Every girl we saw, my friends would point at her and ask me, "What about her?" I'd sigh, shaking my head. To them a relationship was like something you buy at the store; when you get bored with it, you go find another one.

I wasn't looking for that at all. I may sound old-fashioned to them, but I wanted someone who I could connect with. Someone who I could stay up all night and talk to. Just someone to be around.

And to think, I actually found her thanks to my friend's incessant teasing.

We were sitting on our towels, watching the waves wash in and out, while eating our ice cream. I was waiting for the inevitable, and soon it came. "How 'bout her, Bolt?" my friend said, pointing with his muzzle at a flame colored girl. She had spiky black hair and wore goggles on her forehead. Around her neck hung a pendant, and she stared intently at the waves while drawing what looked like a ship. I smiled. Something about her seemed...different.

"I...I guess she looks okay," I said, feeling myself blush beneath my fur. They all whooped, and said, "Talk to her!" I smiled weakly, and got up. "That's my boy!" I heard them cheer.

The walk to her seemed to take years if not eternities. Finally I reached her. She looked up at me, her pale eyes sparkling in the sun. "Can I help you with something?" she asked.

"Uh...I just wanted to say..." I glanced back at my friends, but they were just laughing. "I just wanted to say...that...uh...you look really nice."

She narrowed her eyes, and then smiled a bit. "Was that you out there, surfing?"

"Well...yeah I was surfing..." I trailed off.

"Can you teach me how to surf?" she asked, "I've always wanted to know how."

I smiled at her, "Uh, sure."

She smiled back. "Thanks."

Where I live, there is a myth. A myth of a man with a tail unlike that of ours, strange and alien, more akin to those of other ocean creatures.
He is said to be immensely handsome, one look and you are his. Savage beauty.
He wears a beautiful gold necklace that is said to have once belonged to a royal maiden of the land, he convinced her to enter the sea where she was swallowed up by the waves, and then by him. He needs to eat.

But I would look for him. I would find him.

Why? Because I need to destroy him. When one of us would wander too far from our cities, our homes, he comes, and they are never seen again.
I guess we must make a tasty snack. Disgusting.

I would do anything to help my people.

So, armed only with my wits, my skills, and my charm [something I didn't really have in abundance, but every bit counts], I set off on the journey to find the dreaded creature's home.

After many hours of traveling and I don't know how many circles I found it. It was an ugly rocky cave, surrounded by the bones of creatures, from small fish to whales. I shuddered when I saw a skull of one of my kind, suddenly glad I had eaten light. I swam inside.

It was dark. But other then dark it smelled. The cave had smelled bad outside, but inside it was disgusting! Covering my nose, I looked around for the monster.

"Well hello beautiful," Said a sweet, seductive masculine voice. "It's nice of you to join me here, in my home. Most of your kind doesn't venture out this far, and so I have to take matters into my own webbed hands."

He gently touched my shoulder, and I flinched at the contact. His hand was cold.

"Well? Aren't you going to say something? Or at least turn around so I can see your beautiful face," He said again. But I was still, not looking at him in the fear that I, too would be transfixed by his charm.

"No," I said quietly, my normally abundant courage and spite drained by the presence of this horrible beast with the silken voice.

"No?" Echoed the creature "Well then, why did you come to see me? Is it to end my life?"

The way he said those last words was horrible, the sweetness of his voiced waned and was replaced with a growl. A shrill laugh came after those growled words, making it even more horrible. I felt like I was going to throw up, from the smell and the voice. I hated it. I wanted it to stop. I wanted to go home, to live in blissful peace.

But I would have no such choice, because I felt the water surge behind me. I whipped around, and saw the flashing teeth of the creature as it charged me.

We fought, glasses dislodged, kelp green hair whipped around, teeth flashed, tails flopped, golden jewelry fell to the cave floor.

After it was all over, I floated over the body of my adversary. Covered with cuts and scrapes, my hair in disarray, my necklace nowhere to be seen, I was victorious. I looked down at the body of the beast.

Kelp green hair and a green finned tail.

He wasn't even that handsome.

And so with a flick of my tail I was off, to spread word of the victory through all of the mer-shark kingdom.

She understood and didn't mind who would want a dog like her anyways? She would ask herself. Well she did tell the day she saw him the newest member of the ship his name was Rookie.

Rookie always wanted to be work on a pirate ship and when he was offerad the job he took it not knowing what how much his life was going to change when he first saw her beside the captin her gold hair falling over her shirt and cloak while she looked around then his bird who sat on his head croowed and she turned her head right at him there eyes locked before he blinked and she look away.

Two weeks earlier...

"Septimus! Turchous! My tiny litte crabbies, get out of there." Reena giggled, picking the two up and swimming away from the treasure chest. She placed them lightly on a slab of rock that jutted out from the rest of the reef. "Did you see Jessie's fins today? It looked like she woke up on the wrong side of the conch shell this morning." Reena heard one of her friends tell her once she returned to the palace. Reena just nodded bluntly, not wanting to say anything bad about the distressed mermaid. She swam onward, wanting to be alone with her thoughts. She looked up to the surface as thunder boomed overhead and lightning crackled dangerously close. She grinned, knowing when a storm came, humans wouldn't notice her if she took a peek. Waves sloshed back and forth, throwing her back under for a moment. She resurfaced, getting as close to land as she could. But then, when she thought she had gone unseen, she caught a glimpse of a man she feared most. A human of cruelty and bitterness. A pirate. But not just any pirate. Him.
