This is really helpful! Do you know anything about paperclipping? I feel like such a newbie when I'm trading with someone and I don't really know what it is... ^-^'

Paperclipping means moving up in rarity but not paying fair. It's expecting others to be generous. In some cases, it's fine, in other cases it's not.

For example;
User A has an uncommon dog from may 2010 and sends a trade to user B for a december 2009 uncommon dog. Now, following the 3 month rule, this would be unfair to the 09 dog but some people find this acceptable.

But. There is also users who do this on the rareslist.

User A has a noncoon and sends a trade to user B for a nonjewel. The gap between these two pets is rather big and it makes it a considerable unfair trade. This is a wrong way of paperclipping, since you want others to be super generous with you.

I hope that helped a bit ^.^

If someone compiled a massive hoard of a common pet, and then deleted all those pets, would the pet immediately move up in rarity?

You would have to hoard a LOT in order to it to be effective. I'm talking about 5,000 pets here and most World Record holders don't even come near that.

Even then, there's no guarantee that doing such a thing would have an impact. There's been talk about doing such a project, but in the end it takes way too much effort to amass that kind of hoard just to delete it.

Okay, thanks! I figured it would have to be something insane like that.

You should ask this question in the "How much is this pet worth?" thread. ^^

The three month rule refers to a standard by which one can trade / swap pets with others. It basically says that you can straight swap / trade a pet for another one whose newborn date is 3 months ahead of behind. So for example, if you have a pet that you adopted in June 2012, going back and ahead 3 months, you could generally (and hopefully) straight swap / trade it for a pet with an adoption date ranging from March 2012 to September 2012. This is not always true though, it's just a nice rule to use that can help you with swapping and trading some pets. The pet type, pet rarities (whether it's common or uncommon or even rare), demand of pets, etc. can all have an impact on this so do not always rely on this rule. Generally this rule will work for you best if you deal with trading pets within the past year or two. If you go further back, from 2008 to 2010-ish, you'll start to find that this rule isn't going to work well for you simply because of the different pet rarity values and demand applied to all sorts of pets.
