I often wonder why.

I watch you win every single time. Not only that, but I watch you while I fail. I'm always in last place. I'm never the one picked, and I have given up on the royalties you enjoy so much... but you still rub them in my face, ridiculing me when I'm upset, trying to egg me on, back into the running.

You don't know how much I hate you for that.

You're a bully. You beat me down, and force me into some version of perfection. I am bent and twisted in so many different ways, that I will never be the same. But it's what I deserve, don't I? I deserve the pain. I deserve twice the amount of pain you give me, as well as what I put on myself - is that how it works? Is that why I'm here? So you can hurt me over and over and over?

You never notice my tears. You don't want to hold me. Comfort me. You push me away, even when I'm in so much pain that I can't move anymore. Even when strangers are absolutely willing to take care of me. You call me weak, but I am strong. I have to be... else I would have broken long before now.

Why do I stay...? I've been asked that. I've been advised to leave. To cut my own path... because being alone is better than being a doormat. But I know why I stay. Because despite everything, I still love you.

I love you. I hate you. They're one and the same; and so I hate myself more - more than anything in the world - because I can't stand that I hold even an ounce of dislike in my body.

He started to tear up. It was impossible not to. The heart monitor slowly beeping kept him at no ease at all. She wiped away the tears under his eyes as he looked downwards with a fragile hand. She took a look back at the heart monitor and put another hand over his. "Please be strong. For me." He tried to smile.

"Okay. I... promise."

She softly whispered, barely audible. He nodded as a tear rolled down his cheek again, a tear of both sadness and joy.

[ okay, here's a little explanation of people don't get the ending- the woman didn't realize that her lover had been dead for a year, so when she asked him if he will live with her the sky someday he said already there because he already lives in the sky... |D ]

I can barely catch the remnants of a floating memory as it rides the waves of my mind.
I remember the first time I caught her eye. I was the outcast, the Don Juan of the school, always aching for another make believe adventure of mine.
She was an outcast too, but a popular one, like the leader of her fellow outcasts. She was artsy. Talented. Smart. Cute.
But, she was never a possibility for me.
Until one day, when her car broke down in the middle of winter.
I was also a car mechanic on the side of my make-believe escapades, and I wouldn't have saw her if she wasn't slumped by her car, the snowflakes gently floating onto her hair, and me fighting an "enemy" with my crossbow.
Then she heard me, which wasn't a surprise; she used to say I sounded like a tennis player with all my grunts and "uh's".
I swear her eyes lit up like a kid in a candy store when she met mine. Maybe it was because she had found someone to fix her car, maybe it was because of some deeper reason that I hoped was true, maybe it was just her relief at seeing someone.
She rushed over to me, the smile practically falling off her face. "Can you help me? Please?" she practically begs, her liquid brown eyes boring pleadingly into mine.
"Of course," I say with a touch of glee; it's almost Christmas, and I'm definitely in the Christmas spirit; maybe this is Santa's early gift to me?
She watches me as I work on the car, lifting up the hood and tinkering with the engine, finally deciding to make quiet conversation.
"So." She begins rather timidly for someone I thought to be extremely brave.
"Mmmm?" I say, my face still stuck in the hood.
She clears her throat and begins again. I can feel my cheeks heating up to a warm steady blush, but I ignore it as I focus my attention on the car and to what she's saying.
"You're that guy who they say is like Don Juan? Personally, I don't think there's absolutely anything wrong about having a little adventure once in a while," she says slightly matter-of-factly but still kindly. "What's your name again?"
"Zephyr." I respond bluntly. "And yours is Reese, I know. You are popular enough."
She chuckles, and it's like water flowing over smooth river rocks. "That's just a bunch of lies. Watch where the prom king and queen or the most popular girl in 8th grade ends up in the real life. Maybe they should go through an adventure to see what life really is."
I laugh back.
"Hah, you're telling me."

And so began my long and fabled history with Reese.
