His shoulders slumped and he moved to leave, his heart heavy. He turned, one last time, to see her beautiful face, etched with pain and sadness, glaring tearfully at him.

She whispered a phrase, so quiet he had to strain to hear it.

'How could you, Tom? I trusted you.'

reckless abandonment & love


The smoke swirled away from her lips. She didn't care for the taste of the smoke nor the habit but she thought she was a striking figure with a cigarette in hand.

"You know that isn't good for you, Reckless." I said softly. Her piercing blue eyes met my gaze for only a moment. Then, with as much grace as an elephant, she promptly took a long drag and blew the smoke directly into my face. I couldn't resist coughing the acrid smoke from my lungs which only brought a wicked smirk to her rosebud lips.

"Live a little, Love. Without me, you'd never walk out your front door. Always hiding away from the world, afraid to get hurt." She shut her eyes and tilted back her head to absorb the sunshine full of clouds. Her coffee-with-a-dash-of-creme- hair rippled down the side of the plush chair like a waterfall. The urge to run my fingers through her hair flickered through me for but a second. But it was still there, tempting me and reminding me of what it felt like to be careless.

"But-" Her voice cut through mine with natural authority.

"Please, Love, you know how much I adore your sweet little nothings," The sarcasm in her voice was not lost on me. Unfortunately. "But I couldn't listen to one more. Unless, of course," One cornflower-blue eye opened and peered over at me, a sly smile twisting her lips. "You'd come over here and whisper those sweet nothings into my ear..." She practically purred.
She was always playing these games. Trying to lure me to her, trying to win me over with her dashing ways.

But she caught my hesitation like a cunning cat catching a meek mouse.

Tossing the cigarette over the balcony railing to the street far below, she stood and glided over to me, her face set in a determined smile. The confidence that radiated off of her was astounding, really. There wasn't a flicker of fear nor doubt in her eyes.

"Oh, Love. Do you know just what it's like to taste freedom?" She poured herself into my lap, curling up against me like the cat she was. "Don't you want to feel how wonderful and beautiful and exhilarating we could be together? You and me, nothing but us." My first reaction was fear. And yet, I couldn't deny the way my heart leapt towards her and beat a heavy tattoo whenever she came close or spoke of the delicious adventure she so longed for.

"But I can't give you my trust when you might throw it away when you get bored. You're unpredictable." I'd felt as if we'd had this argument so many times before. But each time it came back round, it only excited her all the more.

"Ooo, but darling, not knowing what's ahead is all the fun! We won't know exactly where we can go or how far, but I can guarantee that it will be worth it." Her warm breath sent goosebumps down my spine. "Me plus you equals the best times you'll ever have. We could go anywhere, do anything as long as you love me, 100%." Her lips brushed against my ear as she whispered below the crisp wind. I felt as if she was a fiery torch, just waiting to burn me. But, by the looks of her eyes -- blazing so with passion and drive -- I knew that she was a roaring inferno, just waiting for me to join in.

"I can't get hurt." My voice sounded doubtful, even to my own ears. There was no match of confidence when compared to hers. Hearing my unsure tone of voice, she buried her fingers in my dark hair. It was as if she knew exactly what to say and do to make me bend towards her will. Her fingertips sent electricity coarsing across my scalp, her warmth ignited butterflies in my stomach.
When she spoke so softly to me, it was obvious that I was nothing but worthless without her.

"'Love enables you to put your deepest feelings and fears in the palm of your partner’s hand, knowing they will be handled with care.'" With a kiss that was just a brush of her lips against mine, she stared me down with those wild eyes of her. She was someone that couldn't and wouldn't be tamed. She was someone who always looked for adventure, no matter what.

And I knew, with utmost certainty that I was her catalyst.

I wouldn't rather it any other way.

I watched with tears streaming down my face as your hand slapped my face. I grimaced in pain, Stupid, useless girl! Why can't you do anything right? You're so difficult, hard to please, forever changing your mind! I took a deep breath and walked upstairs, packing my things. Minutes later I was back downstairs, face red where you had slapped me. I walked out the door as your jaw dropped in disbelief. You won't last a day without me Carter! I got in my car and drove to his house.

I pulled into his driveway, my eyes still wet with tears and ran into his arms. I looked at him, I swallowed as I saw sadness and happiness in his eyes. He stroked my hair and whispered into my ear, You're beautiful, incredible and I can't get you out of my head. You're funny, irresistible and everything I ever wanted. His voice was like silk as I listened to him and let it fill me to the brim. I smiled as he leaned over and kissed me softly on the lips.
