Part 1
Winter

I cranes my neck against the winter gales as I tried to head back home. With a meat parcel under my arm, my only objective was to get home to my children.
Well actually, they're not my children.
They're my siblings.

A few years ago, my father died in a lumber accident leaving my mother with four kids and one on the way. The following spring, she died in childbirth. Being the eldest of 5 now, I became mother and father to them. It was either that or We all went to the orphanage. I may have been 11, but I knew we'd never survive there...
Now at age 14, I was still the sole provider for a 10, 8, 6 and 3 year old. I cut a deal with some of the neighbouring families to allow us to work for food. I did the bulk of the crop work and left my siblings to tend to their sheep, pigs and goats. They were good with them. Occasionally the younger ones would ask about food or clothes but Marie and myself would stay quiet. They didn't need to be burdened with such knowledge yet.

After about ten minutes of trudging through the heavy snow, fatigue held onto me and let me drop the package.
"Ugh, great. Class act I am," I snapped at myself and scooped the package back up again and dusted some of the snow that hadn't seeped through yet.
"Excuse me miss but do you need help?" I heard through the wind. I looked up to see a boy not much older than myself looking intently at me. He seemed to be in a similar situation: poverty and hunger and probably with mouths to feed.
"I'm fine but thank you anyways," I said and began to walk towards him and my home.
"Are you sure?" He asked gently, "my horse is tied up a little ways up the road. I can give you a ride."
I blushed a little at the kindness he showed me though it was hard to tell through my frozen cheeks. "Ok if you don't mind."
"I don't mind at all. Just guide me and I'll guide the horse," he said with a smile. I gladly followed him to his stocky draft and rode with him to my home. As payment, I invited him for dinner with my family. After dinner, I put my younger brothers to bed and let my older sisters take care of the dishes.
"Thank you for dinner. You really didn't have to," he said as We stepped out into the crisp winter night.
"Yes I did, its repayment for what you did for me. Kindness to orphans is hard to come by nowadays."
"I understand completely. But someone like you should see kindness all the time."
"What do you mean?" I asked curiously.
"You're beautiful, pretty girls always get far in life. One day, you'll get snapped up by some upper class guy and go on to let us work boys dream. Anyways, Thank you again. I'll see you around," he said quietly and hopped on his horse and left.
I never forgot that.

More?

{in the point of view of the first dog}

So there I was. I had orders to steal the necklace--and only the necklace. But the girl wouldn't give it up. So what choice did I have but to take the girl too?

She's a strong thing, that girl. Gave me a nasty bruise. She's clever too. Must be 'cuz she's a scientist and all.

But what gets me is that she keeps on smiling. Even if I threatened to kill her, she'd smile at me and say, "Try." I don't know how she does it. Most people would cower and beg for their pathetic lives. But not her.

She gets to me.

And I don't know why, but I went out and bought her this rose. I went out and bought it for her, and now I don't even think I could give it to her. She'd think it was some bribe--but it's not, I swear.

She gets to me. But I love her.

All I knew was I went a little overboard.
Ohkay, a lottle overboard. Whatever.

She sort of took off in a flurry of fluff, leaving my outstretched hands lonely. I made it my sole goal in life to find her later. That was all my brain could focus on, at least.

"So how is this going to work out. " was all my mind could repeat as I waited outside the gym door. I wasn't exactly the macho wolf at the school. My phone's contacts consisted of Mother, Father, Pizza Man, and Pizza Man 2 as opposed to Friend 1 - 1000. I didn't spend time preening away at my hair like a forlorn songbird like the others. I wasn't " That one ", or even " That one number 2 ".
More like " Oh, that one..."

But for some reason I had it set that I had an immediate chance with her. Boy, was my brain screwed.

I'll continue later.

She was singing when she came out, some song I'd never heard.
" The deep sea girl, sinking ever still, shut away beyond the darkness... " I noticed her song trail off as soon as she caught sight of my face. Pretty funny, how people react and all.

She sort of took off running. I bolted after her, wasn't about to let go so fast. But damn, was she a sprinter. Her pink hair caught up in the wind, flowing and twisting in beautiful patterns. The light shone on it in such a perfect way, highlighting the top strands and casting the bottom into a deep reddish color. A butterfly even dared to run alongside with her, fluttering around her hair before taking a place on top of the ocean of pink. She looked more like a goddess than a dog.

No, a goddess wasn't good enough.
A spirit.
The very spirit of beauty.
And I was the spirit of longing.

___

It ended, though. Like the butterfly that landed on her hair, she was too fragile. It was funny, I didn't even know her that well. There wasn't enough time to know her that well. No one got to know her that well. She was around for 2 weeks. No one even knew where she came from, her family, nothing. All I ever got about her was her name, Karin.

And that I only got from her tombstone.

Anthros are used in this story.

firefly [] .&. the first star [?]

The little girl, but the age of four, stood in the grass. Her violet eyes followed the twinkling star, the first of it's kind to dot the darkening orangey-purple layout of approaching dusk. Her mother smiled, putting a hand to her daughter's back.
"Make a wish," she said.
"On what?" the little girl asked, tilting her head.
"On the first star." her mother replied, pointing to the star. "There's an old saying that if you wish on the first star of the night, it'll come true. Repeat after me: Starlight, starbright."
"Starlight, starbright." she repeated softly.
"First star I see tonight," the older woman continued, her arms around her daughter in a hug.
She smiled. "First star I see tonight."
"Wish I may, wish I might."
"Wish I may, wish I might."
"Have the wish I wish tonight." her mother finished. The little girl repeated after her. "Now, Firefly, close your eyes, and make a wish. But don't say it out loud and don't tell anybody, or else it won't come true."
Looking up at her mom for a second, Firefly obeyed. She closed her eyes, put her hands together, and wished. She wished for a younger sister, someone to keep her company during the day when her father was at work and her mother was working in their home office. Somebody to play with when her parents were busy and, despite very eagerly wanting to, could not.
Then, she opened her eyes.

A knock on the door brought her out of her musical trance. The teenage girl pulled her headphones off, pausing the music playing from the small device the headphones were connected to. She set them on top of her math textbook, which she had been doing questions for homework out of, and stood up. She walked over to the door, smiling when she opened it.
"Firefly?" asked a sweet, young voice.
"Hey Meadow. What do you need?" she asked, not at all annoyed by the interruption, and crouched down to look her little sister in those violet eyes that their entire family possessed.
"Could I come sit with you?" she asked shyly, looking down at her tiny hands.
Firefly chuckled and lifted the little girl up into her arms. She giggled, unable not to. "Of course you can." the older sister replied brightly, carrying the young'un in her arms to her bed, where she sat her down and told her fairytales instead of doing her homework. After all, what were big sisters for?
Later that night, hand-in-hand, Firefly and Meadow, who resembled her older sister very closely, went outside. Just like their mother had taught Firefly when she was a girl, she would teach her sister. After all, the wish had come true. She didn't really believe in magic, but she knew there was something whimsical, something powerful, about that first star that winked knowingly at her.
"Repeat after me," she said gently, then recited the poem her mother had taught her. "Now make a wish. But, Meadow, you must say it silently, and you must not tell anybody, or else it won't come true."
Meadow obeyed. She closed her eyes, put her tiny hands together, and made a wish, just as Firefly was doing. Firefly wished that the cute boy - his name was Hudson - in her history class would notice her, talk to her, like her.
"Did any of your wishes ever come true?" Meadow asked her gently afterwards, in that little girl voice.
She just smiled and nodded.

A week later, Firefly raced down the stairs. "Hey, mom, where's my sweater?"
"Why in such a rush, honey?" her mother asked her with a knowing smile.
"I'm gonna be late!" she squealed as she ran into the coatroom, grabbing her favourite purple hoodie and carefully pulling it on so as not to wreck her hair or any of her light makeup.
"For your date? What's your boyfriend's name anyway?" she asked, arching a brow.
"Hudson," Firefly replied in a dreamy voice, smiling. She would never forget the day he asked her out, only five days after she had wished for him to notice her. They had been assigned as lab partners, started talking, starting hanging out as just friends, and started to drift towards being more. Then he had confessed that he'd always been interested in her but hadn't even known her feelings, so he never said anything, and then he had asked her out in the middle of class causing everyone - even the totally strict and mean history teacher Mrs. Alburg, along with the guys of the class - to 'aww' when she said yes and threw her arms around him in a hug.

"Starlight, starbright," Firefly began one night. It was the night of her nineteenth birthday, and her parents had just surprised her with a brand new apartment of her very own, complete with the car of her dreams. "First star I see tonight. Wish I may, wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight." she then closed her eyes, put her hands together, and silently wished that she and Hudson would be married in the following years to come.

It was a couple of months after her twenty-second birthday, and now Firefly stood, looking in a mirror. She put her hands down to the white silk and fabric, smiling. This was it. She had always known it. Seeing the wedding dress at the store a week or two after Hudson had proposed, her friends had all thought it was a bit too simple - It was just white, with a big tu-tu-like poof near the midsection and with faded white velvet designs. Her friends wanted to go with something more complex, but she instantly knew that this was the one.
And now it was her wedding day. She stood in white heels, the dress fitting her perfectly. Her makeup was beautiful and elegant, not too dark but not too light, and her hair was tied up in a perfect style that had taken the hairdresser hours to complete. The small silver tiarra rested in front of the bump in her hair, shining, with the white veil hanging down from it.
"Something old," The tiarra, that was handed down in her family line.
"Something new," the lovely wedding dress.
"Something borrowed," the shoes she wore were courtesy of her best friend, Aliya, who was a year older than her and attending the wedding with her husband of two years as one of the bridesmaids.
"Something blue," the silver necklace that hung from her neck, complete with the set that came with the elegant hanging earrings and bracelet, were decorated with real blue diamonds, shining and sparkling.
Her father, smiling, walked into the room, dressed in traditional black and white. His tux was perfect, just like everything else. He shook his head in disbelief. "I can't believe my little girl is getting married." he said, holding out his arm. "Are you ready?"
She took a deep breath, smiling. Her mother walked in, tearing up with happy tears, then left once more. She took hold of her father's arm and together they proceeded to walk down the aisle, dotted with hundreds of light pink rose petals. The huge group of friends and family rose from their seats, her best friends standing at the front, each holding bouquets of pink tiger lilies - Firefly's favourite flower - and wearing their matching violet dresses that were the same shade as her eyes.
Hudson stood at the front beside the minister, in his black and white tuxedo, looking handsome as ever. A single tiger lily was planted in his suit. He broke out in a huge smile the moment he saw her.
Her mother wiped tears from her eyes, smiling, as she broke away from her father, taking her soon-to-be-husband's hands.
"You look gorgeous." he said under his breath, with a loving sigh. "Like always."

And, despite the fact that it was not anywhere near dusk, a lone star twinkled fondly in the blue sky.

(Point of view is from the black-haired (Makira, the female.))

~Rain, Cloud, and Storm~

If I could sum up my entire life in one word it would be this:

Frustrating.

Every time I managed to work my way out from behind my cold outer shell, every time I was able to open up and release the locks on my heart, I was only met by pain. It was like everything good that was given to me was stripped until I was nothing but bare in the face of a full-blown storm, met by a deluge of rain.

I loved him. I knew that and I have always known such a thing. He completes me. Makes me long for him. Drives me up and down a wall until I have to tear it down to reach him. He is a harsh person. There are limits to how much affection I can drive from his soul. But those few moments that I can grasp the honest love, shinning in those blue eyes, are when I feel completed.

But lately, his eyes don't shine. He's cold. Distant. Looking over his shoulder at someone else. Have I become nothing to him? Have I lost my luster and am now just a dull treasure, discarded? I am just alone now...is that it?

But then HE showed up.

He with amber eyes like sweet and enticing carmel that pulled me in with every rare glance. His soft voice and hushed whispers of longing and need in my ear. His little tug on my sleeve to ask of me to come closer. He's waiting. He's been waiting all this time and I have merely dismissed him because I was too concerned with the other. Have I been missing out of the one person that could complete me because I was too busy chasing after a dream?

Who is it do I really love? And what shall become of me when I chose?

What is a cloud like me meant to create.

Rain...or a storm?

(WIP, should I continue?

-Makira)

ok, here's more as requested!

I can't believe he's gone...

Part 1
Part 2

Spring

After that night, the snowstorm grew worse and heavy snow blanketed the land around my home. It became hard to trudge through the snow so I was the only one who ventured out to work, leaving Marie to watch the younger ones as I did so. Since we lived in the northern highlands, heavy winter snow came early and stayed late which made the weather a hinderance at times, but nothing I couldn't handle.
By the time spring arrived weather wise, it was mid May and the snow melt this year was generous for our fields. Before the spring rains became constant, I decided to get everyone out to help plough the fields and plant the seeds.
Hopefully we can turn a profit this year, I thought to myself as I hauled a bag of corn seed back from the mercantile.
By the time I brought the seed back, the boys had begun to turn the soil with hoes but had achieved little progress since I left. After putting the bag down, I looked to find an old plough in the barn that could still be used.
Maybe if we had a horse, I thought mentally chastising myself for such stupid thinking. How on earth could I ever think we could hand plough an acre field by ourselves? In anger, I pulled the plough out into the rain and slung it into the mud with a growl of anger.
"You lookin' to sell that? Mine just broke." I looked up to see that same boy from the winter trot by on his bay Percheron with a happy look on his face. Ironic for someone around here with the prospect of buying another plough.
"Not really, thanks. I have to plough my own fields," I said in a bit of a snippy tone. I'd admit, his optimism annoyed me a little.
"Ah ok. Well in that case, I'll let you get your horse and set up."
"I don't have one. We had to sell it years ago," I snapped and turned back towards the plough. If we had hung onto that horse, it would've helped us tremendously. Even if we had to buy hay or use someone else's pastures.
"Hey I've got an idea. We'll strike a deal. I plough both your and my fields with my horse and your plough. That way we're even. Sound good to you?" he said, steering his horse into our barnyard. With an opportunity like this, I needed to swallow my pride a little. It was a good opportunity and he wasn't all bad anyways.
"Alright then, let's do it," I said and began to prep the plough for work. It took us the rest of the day but with both fields ploughed, we were both able to plant and hopefully grow something edible to last us next winter.
With that out of the way, I let the boys take handfuls of seeds and scatter them as we rested from a long day's work.
"We make a good team, you and I. I didn't know you worked so hard," he said after draining another glass of water.
"Thanks. You know, we never did properly introduce ourselves. All I've known you for the past few months is the boy with the Percheron," I said with a laugh.
He joined in and extended a hand shake. "My name's Milo. Good to meet you."
"Marina."
"Marina, pretty name. It suits you."
"The name for a boating dock suits me? That's new," I said rather sarcastically.
"Well the sea is beautiful, and so is the land so what's more beautiful than the seaside?" he said quietly again. I figured out after the last encounter that he gets shy around girls. "Well thanks again for the water and plough partnership. I'll se you around Marina."
"See you," I said as he hopped onto his horse and left. As much as I'd refuse to admit it at the time, I hoped he'd surface again soon.
