Tempt & Lure
-------------
He was perfect. But he was still. Unmoving. Encased.
She could not have saved him if she had tried.
She was a medic. The boy had been put under her care years ago. His parents could not let him go.
At first, he responded well to the treatment. He played games with her, as she sat on the side of his cot. He had enjoyed strategy games, and puzzles. He was a bright one.
Then, little by little, his body was siezed, held captive in his shell.
He could no longer talk to her in that sweet, innocent voice.
His eyes would never move to meet hers, deciphering her next move in chess.
His laugh would never again be infectious, the one thing all of the doctors never wanted him to be cured of.
But then, he went still.
"Tempie?"
"Yes darling?"
"Will you save me?"
"Yes."
As his parents caved away under sorrow, they could not take his life - or what was left of it - from him.
So now he lays, confined inside his own body, on a bed he will never leave.
"Will you save me?"
"Yes."
I am the green thumb. Why couldn't I save you?
Sleep tight, my Lure.
------------
As soon as I saw little Lure my mind went to the story of King Midas and the golden and green thumbs.
These are not a romantic pair, but more of a sibling type bond that formed.

Blackbird & Kaylie
blackbird singing in the dead of night
take these broken wings and learn to fly
all your life
you were only waiting for this moment to arise
"momma! momma there's a birdie in the window! momma!" the childish voice rang through the house accompanied with the scurry of bare feet. "momma! come now, momma!" the cry came again as the young girl ran ran into the kitchen, brushing her golden curls from her blue eyes that were widened in alarm. her mother sighed as she wiped her hands on a dishtowel. "what is it now, kaylie?" she asked, tired patience filled her voice.
"momma, there's a birdie in the window. i think it's hurt, momma, i think it's hurt bad..." her sky eyes filled with tears and she hugged the tattered pink teddy closer to her, absentmindedly chewing on the corner of it's already chewed paw. mother sighed again. "show me."
the girl led to her the window where on the ledge a black mess of feathers flopped clumsily, one wing dragging helplessly. "see? we gotta help it, momma. it's hurting." she said urgently, leaning against the window. her mother's heart softened at the sight of the small helpless creature. "go get me a towel, sweetie. we'll get it inside and see what's wrong." she said. the girl pattered away, returning quickly with a clean towel. her mother took the things and carefully opened the window, not wanting to scare the bird. she managed to coax it inside, wrapping it in the towel, and then took it to the table. she examined it carefully, stretching out it's wings. "oh, honey, it's wing is broken. i don't think it will ever be able to fly again. it'd be best to...to put it out of it's misery." kaylie's eyes stretched wide. "no! no we can't kill it! it wants to fly. it just wants to fly. i'll help it, momma. i'll help it fly again. please don't let it die. please!" she pleaded, putting her hand protectively over the little winged creature. "i'll help it, i promise." her mother looked at her skeptically, then shook her head. "kaylie, it can't be saved. it's wing is shattered. i can't fix it...it'll die anyway. it's already dying...i'm sorry, honey." the small girl shook her head, eyes overflowing with tears. she took the small bird and held it to her chest, feeling it's dying heartbeat next to her own live one.
"but momma, i don't want it to die." tears flowed down her face. her mother hugged her child to her and they both sat there, holding the tiny life as it breathed it's last. the daughter looked down at the bundle of black feathers and whispered, "i'll help you fly one day..."
10 months later...
"there." her mother said as she secured the golden scarf around her daughter's smooth head. "it... it looks just like your hair used to." she smiled, her eyes tired and saddened and held up a mirror. kaylie looked at herself. she was pale, her once bright eyes sunk into her skeletal face. the scarf completely covered her now bald head. the leukemia had taken it's toll, and still was trying to take the last bit of her. even such a bright soul can only fight so much. "it looks... pretty, momma. thank... you." she said slowly, each word a struggle to get out. reaching out, mother stroked the scarf slowly. they sat there for what seemed liked hours, but what was only a few minutes. a few precious minutes.
"momma... can you... get me some... water?" kaylie asked, licking her dry lips. her mother jumped up. "of course, sweetheart. i'll be right back." she left the room, her shoes whispering on the linoleum floors. kaylie sighed. she was so tired. so so tired. she would just close her eyes for a moment...
she opened them again, suddenly feeling much better. "momma, nevermind. i can get it myself..." her voice seemed to echo off the walls as she hopped off of the bed. turning, she noticed the window set into the gray wall. it was glowing a gold color, like it was emanating light. a shape fluttered there. she walked over to it, squinting. there in the window was the blackbird, urgently flapping it's wings. she opened up the window, carefully. "b-blackbird?" she asked. it's gazed focused on her, tilting it's head. then it opened it's beak. "fly with me." it whispered.
and so she did.

all your life
you were only waiting for this moment to be free
blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night
