^THIS. SO MUCH.
I've been around CS since January 09 and I've been poisoning this thread since the first version of it came out in either 2009/2010 and I can HONESTLY say (and I'm really trying to stay polite) I have never seen so much desperation and neediness. You all need to stop for a second and go look in the mirror. What you should see reflecting back at you is a beautiful, individual, unique, kick-ass girl or guy who is an amazing writer! Now, smile at your mirror image. See how good that feels? You guys do NOT need anyone else's comments or critiques or opinions or reviews on your stories; if you're proud of what you've produced, to hell with the rest of the world! Screw 'em! You shouldn't need comments from other people on the internet who you've never met to decide if your stories are good or bad; I'll tell you now that every story written is a good story if it comes from the heart. So wave goodbye to what you see in the mirror and go find your self-confidence! I know it's out there waiting for you! <3
and now for my own little kick-ass pair:
Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high
Unicorns go frolicking through clouds
With bunny rabbits by their side
Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue
Here on Chickensmoothie, we're all completely nuts
And the funny this is - you are too (for reading this stupid poem)

complete story here
---It was the strangest song, truly. Of course, it was hard to understand the words -- Samuel thought that perhaps there weren't any words at all -- for he had quickly fallen under her spell. She didn't sing loudly so the whales could still be heard, ever so faintly. But he felt goose bumps race across his skin, his dark pupils expanding until there was only a small circle of brown around the black, and his heart kick-start to an unbelievable pace. All thoughts flew from his mind. All he could think about was how beautiful she was, how the song brought out his dreams while he was awake, and how wonderful it would be to go swimming. If Samuel had been more responsive, he would have realized that her eyes had gone fully golden. Her own pupils were no where to be found. Her tattoos seemed to whirl and twirl much faster and they created a tinny humming sound. The long fish-tail had slipped back into the cold water, her eyes never leaving his. Unaware, Sam leaned ever closer to her, entirely captivated.
Now only one of her pale hands held on to the boat. Samuel was becoming terribly close to tipping the boat. He couldn't pull away from the trance, her song was just so perfect. It made him realize how very lonely he was. How poor he was. How he just wanted someone to hold and to hold him in return.
But it was hard to tell himself that a mermaid could never love a clumsy human.
The only thing that saved Sam from drowning in the depths was the mermaid herself. She was simply singing, it was as if her heart wasn't in it, and her hesitation saved him. The song broke as her voice did and the trance was shattered and that was all Samuel needed to escape. He gasped as the dreams flew from him. The split second before he hit the water Sam settled on one thought: Mermaids were nothing but trouble.
The water was much, much colder than he could have ever expected. It was a shock that brought him back to reality, back to his own thoughts. For a horrid moment, Sam couldn't swim up to the surface. The moon looked so watery, similar to when he accidently spilled his paints. The heavy layers he wore were slowly pulling him down instead of up, where he needed to be. His lungs were starting to ache, hurt from the lack of the sweet night air. A flash of panic cut through his chest. No, no, no. He couldn't die here, after all that had happened. But he didn't have to prepare himself for his death. A large tail swam above him, outlined by the watery moon. A pair of surprisingly strong arms wrapped around him and dragged him to the surface of the salty ocean.
The air felt like it was ripping through his lungs when Sam gulped it in. His attempt to return to the boat was no where near graceful but the wood had never been more comforting. The stars went on shining for they didn't care about one lost, lonely soul. Once he could breathe without his throat stinging, Samuel cautiously peered over the side of the boat. There was the mermaid, looking extremely distraught. The salt water burned Sam's eyes but not enough to make him look away from her dainty face.
"You saved me. You were about to lure me to the deep to kill me but... B-But you didn't." Samuel cringed and mentally kicked himself when he heard the stutter in his voice shake across his words. It was fear. He feared her more than anything. With just a few notes of her song, she could have him in the palm of her pretty little hands.
There was another round of mermaid hisses when they realized that she hadn't done the job correctly. Or at all. The young mermaid started and curled even more into herself. The look of anguish upon her face made Samuel's heart break.
He had no idea what he was supposed to to now.
Should he row back to the island? Should he comfort her? Sam felt a dozen different emotions pull him so many ways. What was he to do? Yet, his instincts saved him from having to decide.
"Could I see you again?" He would love to sketch her. To donate an entire book to her. The way her hair fell in small waves, the way her eyes were so wide and innocent, and more importantly, to see if he could capture her un-earthly beauty.
The shock that flickered across her face was only to be expected. "Please?" A minute or two must have past before she did anything but stare up at his eyes. Then, ever so slightly, a small, rueful smile touched her perfect lips. She gave a tiny nod before she pulled a light gold scale from her tail. With the touch of a butterfly, she placed the scale into his hand and flashed him a gorgeous smile. And then, with just a flick of her tail, she was gone.
Samuel gave himself a few -- long -- moments for his racing heart to slow before he began to row towards the few lights left on the island.
He couldn't stop smiling.
A mermaid.
He was going to see a mermaid. Again.
It all seemed too good to be true, but Samuel held onto it with all that he had.
